Format

An AI listicle generator where every item has to earn its place

A listicle is read by somebody who is scanning, which makes it the easiest format to generate and the easiest to generate badly. Ten items of equal weight, each a feature restated as a benefit, is a page a reader finishes without having learned anything.

What a list is actually doing

Two things at once, and generators usually get one of them. It gives a scanner permission to skip, which is why the format converts on traffic that will not read paragraphs. And it implies an ordering, which is a claim: item one is presented as mattering more than item six, and a reader who disagrees with the order stops trusting the list.

So the ordering has to come from somewhere other than a model's sense of rhythm. Here it comes from the evidence: the objections buyers in your category raise most often go highest, because the list is answering them in the order they occur to the person reading.

Items are written as outcomes rather than features, and each one carries the evidence it rests on where it rests on anything. An item that is genuinely a preference rather than a finding is written as a preference, because a list where every entry claims to be a fact is a list where none of them reads as one.

Ranking is a comparative claim, and those are graded hardest

The moment a page says one thing is better than another, it has made a claim about somebody else's product, and comparative claims are one of the three categories held to a higher standard everywhere they appear. That is true of a roundup naming competitors and it is true of a reasons-why list that implies them.

Every claim on a generated page is graded against the evidence behind it, and the regulated categories, health, financial and comparative, are escalated whatever the evidence says, with the reason shown. A sentence nothing supports blocks the export until it is resolved, rewritten as a position rather than a finding, or cut.

This is the format where that matters most, because a list is the format most likely to be lifted wholesale into an ad.

Sourced

The claim rests on evidence with a URL and a date, and the item shows it.

Needs confirming

Something supports it, partly. Flagged with the reason so you can decide.

Unsupported

Nothing behind it. It cannot be exported as a fact until you fix it.

Where the items come from

What buyers complain about

Review sites and public discussion about the products your buyers already own. A reasons-why list written against real objections is a different page from one written against imagined ones.

What you actually do

Your product facts, extracted from your own site and editable. A fact you lock survives every later regeneration; a fact you prohibit is never used again.

What the category is being told

What the answer engines say about this category today, which is increasingly where the comparison a buyer trusts is formed before they reach any page of yours.

What you are willing to claim

Nothing is published on your behalf. You edit every item, and the evidence behind each one is visible in the editor while you do.

Test the order rather than arguing about it

A list is the format where an A/B test is most obviously worth running, because the variable is small and the effect is not: the same items in a different order is a genuinely different page to a scanner. You can run one on the page itself, with both arms carrying the same measurement, and promote the winner into the document when the sample is large enough to mean something.

A rate is reported as not enough data yet rather than as a number until there is enough of it, no winner is ever declared for you, and promoting an arm the numbers do not favour is allowed and asks you to confirm it in so many words.

Check a list you are already running

Put it through the free claim risk scanner. It reads the page sentence by sentence and lists the claims that point at nothing, flagging the comparative ones separately, which on a ranked list is usually most of them. No account, no limit.
