Answer Radar / Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews tracker: whether the Overview appears, who it cites, and whether any of it is you

AI Overviews decide the answer before the buyer sees a single blue link, and they only appear on some searches. Answer Radar is adding them as a fifth measured engine on the same prompt set as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, so you see one table across every surface your buyers use, and the run data on this page fills the day the engine ships.

Measured data on this page last updated 2026-09-04.

What a Google AI Overviews citation tracker is

The answer first, because this is the sentence every other definition on the page depends on.

A Google AI Overviews tracker records, for each search a buyer might run, whether an AI Overview appeared, whether it named or recommended your brand, and which pages it cited. Unlike an assistant, the surface is conditional: measuring it starts with how often it shows up at all. Answer Radar treats it as a fifth engine beside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, measured from one prompt set so the numbers are comparable.

What this page will measure on Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews is being added to Answer Radar as a measured engine. This section fills with run data the day it ships, in the same shape as the four engines below, and the date at the top of the page changes with it. Until then the numbers here belong to the other engines and are shown for scale, not as Google AI Overviews results.

Recorded on every Google AI Overviews run, once live

  • Share of answers in which the surface appeared at all, because unlike an assistant it does not answer every query.
  • Every cited URL with its domain, position and owner, and whether the customer or a tracked competitor was named or recommended.
  • The same prompt set as the other four engines, so the cross-engine table below gains a fifth row rather than a separate report.

Why there is no number here yet

This page shipped ahead of the engine on a founder decision so the URL, the definitions and the internal links are in place when the first run lands. Every other tracker page on this site publishes its numbers from stored runs, and this one will do the same. Until then, a number here would be a guess, and the whole point of the product is that it does not guess.

The four live engines, same prompt sets, completed answers only. AI Overviews will join as a fifth row with one extra column: how often the Overview appeared at all.

How Answer Radar tracks Google AI Overviews

Four steps, and the third is the one the category skips.

Step 1

Write the questions a buyer types, not your brand name

Prompt research proposes them from your site and your competitors; you approve the set. Best X for Y, alternatives to Z, is W worth it. A brand-name prompt tells you nothing you did not already know.

Step 2

Run them against Google AI Overviews with no steering

No system prompt, no memory, no logged-in history that has already seen your site. Each answer, its citations and its fan-out searches are stored with the run.

Step 3

Read the sources that decided each answer

For every question you lost, the page shows which URLs Google AI Overviews read and what they said about the competitor it chose. That is the gap, and the fix is written against that page, not against a score.

Step 4

Re-run on a schedule and read the delta

Answers move between runs. Answer Radar keeps every run, so the question is never whether your number changed but whether the recommendation did, and on which prompts.

Check one question now, free

Type your brand, two competitors and a question a buyer would ask. This free check runs on the Gemini assistant, not on AI Overviews, and says so on the result; the two share models but not retrieval. The paid product runs the question on every live engine and will add AI Overviews when it ships.

One live check at a time. Each one costs real money to run, so there is a daily cap.

Enter your brand and a real buyer question to see whether an answer engine recommends you, and who it recommends instead.

Citation, mention, recommendation, fan-out

Four words this category uses interchangeably. The tracker scores them separately because buyers experience them differently.

Google AI Overviews citation

A source Google AI Overviews references while composing an answer, usually a link shown beside or beneath the response. A page can be cited without your brand appearing in the text at all, and your brand can appear with no citation pointing at you.

Mention

Your brand name in the answer text. It tells you that you exist to the model. It does not tell you which page put you there or whether the buyer would pick you.

Recommendation

Google AI Overviews putting you forward as the answer rather than listing you among options. This is what Answer Radar scores against, because it is the outcome that correlates with a buyer choosing you.

Query fan-out

The searches Google AI Overviews runs by itself before answering. One buyer question routinely becomes several searches, and those searches, not the original prompt, decide which pages get read.

What it records, and what nobody can see

A poster in r/GEO_optimization put the category's open question well: most tools track citations, which ones track business impact? For AI Overviews the honest answer is narrower still, because Search Console folds Overview clicks into organic totals. Here is what can be recorded and what cannot.

Recorded on every run

  • The full answer text, stored per run, so a change in what Google AI Overviews says is a diff you can read, not a score that moved.
  • Every URL Google AI Overviews cited, with its domain and its position in the answer, and whether it belongs to you, to a competitor you track, or to a third party.
  • The searches Google AI Overviews issued on its own before answering, which are rarely the words your buyer typed.
  • Each brand named in the answer, in order, and whether it was recommended or only listed. Being named eighth in a list is a mention; being the answer is a recommendation, and the two are scored separately.

Not knowable, by us or by anyone

  • How many people asked Google AI Overviews that question. Google publishes no prompt volume. Any tool quoting one is estimating.
  • Whether a Google AI Overviews answer sent you a visit. Assistants pass little or no referrer, so traffic attribution from an answer is inference, and we do not report it as measurement.
  • Why Google AI Overviews chose a source. We record what it searched and what it cited. The reason is a hypothesis, and the page marks it as one.
  • That your fix caused the change. Re-measurement reports the observed delta, labelled as observed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Google AI Overviews tracker?+

A Google AI Overviews tracker records, for each search a buyer might run, whether an AI Overview appeared, whether it named or recommended your brand, and which pages it cited. It differs from tracking an assistant like ChatGPT in one important way: AI Overviews do not appear on every query, so the first thing to measure is whether the surface showed up at all. Answer Radar is adding AI Overviews as a fifth measured engine on the same prompt set as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, so the result is a fifth row in one table rather than a separate report.

What is the best tool to track AI Overviews brand mentions?+

The one that stores the cited pages per query per run and measures the other engines from the same prompt set, because AI Overviews cite differently from the assistants. SE Ranking published that review directories such as G2 and Capterra appear in 34.5% of AI Overviews; a practitioner in r/aeo measuring one B2B niche over a week found directories in 0.1% to 3.8% of cited URLs depending on whether the query was shaped as best or as alternatives. Both numbers are honest and they are not comparable, because one counts answers and the other counts URLs. Pick a tool that tells you which denominator it uses. Answer Radar publishes its own numbers per engine on these pages.

How do I get cited in Google AI Overviews?+

Rank for the query first, then be the page that answers it in a form the Overview can lift: a direct answer near the top, a table or list where the fact is structured, and a clear entity definition. AI Overviews draw mostly from pages that already rank on the same search, which makes this the one engine where classic SEO and answer engine optimization are close to the same job. Where they differ is in citation share: an Overview cites a handful of pages and hands the recommendation to whoever it reads, so the page to fix is the cited one, not your ranking.

Are AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?+

Google merged them into one flow in Search in 2026, announced at I/O: a search now shows an AI Overview that can continue directly into an AI Mode conversation. Both run on Gemini models, but they are a different surface from the Gemini assistant, with different retrieval and different behaviour on Reddit. When ChatGPT's visible Reddit citations dropped about 86% in mid-August 2026, a Promptwatch dataset discussed in r/ChatGPTPro showed AI Overviews dipping only about 11%. Answer Radar tracks the Gemini assistant today and will report AI Overviews as its own engine.

Why is there no AI Overviews run data on this page yet?+

Because the engine is being added and nothing here reports a measurement that has not been made. The four engines that are live have their run data on their own pages and in the table above, dated 2026-09-04. When AI Overviews ships, this page gains the same fields: how often the Overview appeared, who it named, who it recommended, and every cited page with its owner. The date at the top of the page changes with it.

Can a tool tell me how much traffic AI Overviews send me?+

Search Console reports AI Overview impressions and clicks inside the normal Web search totals without a separate filter, so you cannot isolate them there, and a click from an Overview looks like an organic click. Third-party estimates are inference. Answer Radar measures appearance, mention, recommendation and citation, which are observable, and reports change over time rather than a traffic number it cannot see.

What does AI Overviews tracking cost with Linkeddit?+

It is part of Answer Radar, included with the Compete plan at $99 a month, with no per-engine or per-citation charge. Runs draw on a monthly credit allowance shown in the app, and the same plan carries the weekly competitor brief and demand intelligence.
