Answer Radar / ChatGPT
ChatGPT citation tracker: see who ChatGPT recommends, and which pages made it choose
Answer Radar asks ChatGPT the questions your buyers type, records every source it cites and every search it runs, and tells you on which prompts it recommended a competitor instead of you. Then it re-runs, so the fix is measured rather than hoped for.
Measured data on this page last updated 2026-09-04.
What a ChatGPT citation tracker is
The answer first, because this is the sentence every other definition on the page depends on.
A ChatGPT citation tracker records which sources ChatGPT cites when it answers a buyer's question, and whether that answer recommends you, a competitor, or nobody. There is no ranked list to read off, so the tracker stores the answer text, the cited URLs and the searches ChatGPT ran, and compares them run over run. Answer Radar does this for ChatGPT alongside Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, from one prompt set, so the four engines are comparable.
What ChatGPT actually did across 47 buyer questions
Read-only aggregate of every completed ChatGPT answer Answer Radar has run, 12 runs, to 2026-09-04. Search behaviour counts every answer; who got recommended counts the 22 answers from customer projects only, with our own brand's runs removed. A small B2B software sample, published because nobody else in this category publishes theirs.
The domains ChatGPT leaned on
Share of the 22 customer-project answers in which the domain was cited at least once. 27 distinct domains appeared across 83 citations.
| hubspot.com | 7 of 22 answers (31.8%) |
| techradar.com | 7 of 22 answers (31.8%) |
| salesforce.com | 5 of 22 answers (22.7%) |
| g2.com | 3 of 22 answers (13.6%) |
| forbes.com | 2 of 22 answers (9.1%) |
Vendor sites and editorial listicles, not forums. The folk wisdom that ChatGPT cites Reddit heavily did not hold here: 1 Reddit citation in 83. Perplexity is the engine where that wisdom is closer to true, and the table below shows the gap.
Who got recommended
- The customer was named in 6 of 22 answers and recommended in 3.
- A tracked competitor was recommended with the customer absent in 8 answers.
- ChatGPT named neither the customer nor any tracked competitor in 3 answers.
- Of 83 citations, 4 pointed at a customer domain and 13 at a competitor domain. The rest were third parties, which is where the fight is.
ChatGPT was the engine most likely to hand the answer to a tracked competitor: 8 of 22 customer answers, against 3 where the customer was the recommendation.
| Engine | Searched the web | Citations per answer | Answers citing Reddit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 74.5% | 3.72 | 4.5% |
| Perplexity | 100% | 9.8 | 20% |
| Gemini | 93.5% | 5.27 | 5% |
| Claude | 85.1% | 3.93 | 0% |
Same prompt sets, same projects, completed answers only; the Reddit column counts customer-project answers. ChatGPT is the engine most likely to answer from training with no source at all, which is why a ChatGPT-only tracker undercounts what buyers see elsewhere.
How Answer Radar tracks ChatGPT
Four steps, and the third is the one the category skips.
Write the questions a buyer types, not your brand name
Prompt research proposes them from your site and your competitors; you approve the set. Best X for Y, alternatives to Z, is W worth it. A brand-name prompt tells you nothing you did not already know.
Run them against ChatGPT with no steering
No system prompt, no memory, no logged-in history that has already seen your site. Each answer, its citations and its fan-out searches are stored with the run.
Read the sources that decided each answer
For every question you lost, the page shows which URLs ChatGPT read and what they said about the competitor it chose. That is the gap, and the fix is written against that page, not against a score.
Re-run on a schedule and read the delta
Answers move between runs. Answer Radar keeps every run, so the question is never whether your number changed but whether the recommendation did, and on which prompts.
Check one question now, free
Type your brand, two competitors and a question a buyer would ask. This free check runs on Gemini and says so on the result; the paid product runs the same question on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude and keeps the history.
Enter your brand and a real buyer question to see whether an answer engine recommends you, and who it recommends instead.
Citation, mention, recommendation, fan-out
Four words this category uses interchangeably. The tracker scores them separately because buyers experience them differently.
ChatGPT citation
A source ChatGPT references while composing an answer, usually a link shown beside or beneath the response. A page can be cited without your brand appearing in the text at all, and your brand can appear with no citation pointing at you.
Mention
Your brand name in the answer text. It tells you that you exist to the model. It does not tell you which page put you there or whether the buyer would pick you.
Recommendation
ChatGPT putting you forward as the answer rather than listing you among options. This is what Answer Radar scores against, because it is the outcome that correlates with a buyer choosing you.
Query fan-out
The searches ChatGPT runs by itself before answering. One buyer question routinely becomes several searches, and those searches, not the original prompt, decide which pages get read.
What it records, and what nobody can see
A practitioner in r/bigseo put the category's problem plainly: ChatGPT answers fluctuate more than the SERPs, and you get hypothetical data, not user data. Both are true. Here is what that leaves.
Recorded on every run
- The full answer text, stored per run, so a change in what ChatGPT says is a diff you can read, not a score that moved.
- Every URL ChatGPT cited, with its domain and its position in the answer, and whether it belongs to you, to a competitor you track, or to a third party.
- The searches ChatGPT issued on its own before answering, which are rarely the words your buyer typed.
- Each brand named in the answer, in order, and whether it was recommended or only listed. Being named eighth in a list is a mention; being the answer is a recommendation, and the two are scored separately.
Not knowable, by us or by anyone
- How many people asked ChatGPT that question. OpenAI publishes no prompt volume. Any tool quoting one is estimating.
- Whether a ChatGPT answer sent you a visit. Assistants pass little or no referrer, so traffic attribution from an answer is inference, and we do not report it as measurement.
- Why ChatGPT chose a source. We record what it searched and what it cited. The reason is a hypothesis, and the page marks it as one.
- That your fix caused the change. Re-measurement reports the observed delta, labelled as observed.
Frequently asked questions
What is a ChatGPT citation tracker?+
A ChatGPT citation tracker records which sources ChatGPT cites when it answers a question, and whether the answer recommends you, a competitor, or nobody. It differs from a rank tracker in that there is no ranked list to read off: ChatGPT composes one answer, so the tracker has to store the answer text, the cited URLs and the searches ChatGPT ran, then compare them across runs. Answer Radar does that for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude from one project.
How do I track brand mentions in ChatGPT?+
Write ten to twenty-five questions a buyer would type before choosing a product in your category, run each one in a clean ChatGPT session, and record three things: whether your brand was named, whether it was recommended or only listed, and which sources ChatGPT cited. Do it again in two to three weeks and compare. Doing it by hand works for one round and breaks down on the third, which is what a tracker is for.
Which sources does ChatGPT cite most?+
In the 22 completed ChatGPT answers Answer Radar has run for customer projects to 2026-09-04, the most cited domains were hubspot.com (31.8%), techradar.com (31.8%), salesforce.com (22.7%) and g2.com (13.6%). Vendor pages and editorial listicles dominated; Reddit appeared in 1 of 83 citations. That is a B2B software sample of 22 answers, not a general rule, and the mix will differ in your category.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?+
Usually because the pages ChatGPT reads for your category name the competitor and not you: comparison listicles, review-site profiles, and vendor pages that answer the exact question. In our customer runs a competitor was recommended without the customer in 8 of 22 completed answers, and 13 of 83 citations pointed at a competitor's own domain against 4 for the customer. The tracker shows which cited page did the damage on each prompt so the fix is aimed at a page, not at a score.
Does ChatGPT search the web before answering?+
Often, not always. Across 47 completed answers in our runs, ChatGPT searched in 74.5% and cited at least one source in 72.3%. Perplexity searched in every answer and cited 9.8 sources on average; Gemini searched in 93.5%. When ChatGPT does not search, it answers from training, and no page you publish today changes that answer until the next model update.
Does ChatGPT cite Reddit?+
Rarely, in our data: 1 Reddit citation in 83 across customer projects, against 20% of Perplexity answers citing a Reddit page. A Promptwatch dataset discussed in r/ChatGPTPro put Reddit's share of ChatGPT search citations at about 0.5% from mid-August 2026, down from 3.8%, while retrieval-level trackers reported ChatGPT still reading Reddit threads without listing them. Treat ChatGPT's visible citations as what it chose to show, not everything it read.
Can a tool tell me how much traffic ChatGPT sent me?+
Not reliably. ChatGPT passes little or no referrer information, so any traffic figure attributed to it is inference from landing pages and UTM patterns. Answer Radar measures what is observable, recommendation and citation, and reports change over time. If a vendor shows you a ChatGPT traffic number without explaining how it was inferred, ask.
What does ChatGPT citation tracking cost with Linkeddit?+
It is part of Answer Radar, included with the Compete plan at $99 a month, with no per-engine or per-citation charge. Runs draw on a monthly credit allowance shown in the app, and the same plan carries the weekly competitor brief and demand intelligence.
