Answer Radar / Perplexity

Perplexity brand mentions tracker: every source it cites, and whether any of them are yours

Perplexity searches the web on every answer and shows its sources, which makes it the most transparent engine to track and the easiest one to get wrong by counting mentions alone. Answer Radar records the whole citation panel per buyer question, per run, and shows which pages are getting a competitor cited where you are not.

Measured data on this page last updated 2026-09-04.

What a Perplexity citation tracker is

The answer first, because this is the sentence every other definition on the page depends on.

A Perplexity brand mentions tracker records, for each question a buyer might ask, whether Perplexity named you, whether it recommended you or only listed you, and every source it cited while answering. On Perplexity the citation panel is most of the evidence: it searched in 100% of the completed answers in our runs and cited 9.8 sources on average, so a tracker that stores mentions without sources throws away the part you can act on. Answer Radar measures Perplexity alongside ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude from one prompt set.

What Perplexity actually did across 44 buyer questions

Read-only aggregate of every completed Perplexity answer Answer Radar has run, 9 runs, to 2026-09-04. Search behaviour counts every answer; who got recommended counts the 15 answers from customer projects only, with our own brand's runs removed. A small B2B software sample, published because nobody else in this category publishes theirs.

The domains Perplexity leaned on

Share of the 15 customer-project answers in which the domain was cited at least once. 98 distinct domains appeared across 144 citations.

techradar.com4 of 15 answers (26.7%)
youtube.com4 of 15 answers (26.7%)
goconsensus.com3 of 15 answers (20%)
pipeline.zoominfo.com3 of 15 answers (20%)
reddit.com3 of 15 answers (20%)

Editorial reviews, YouTube comparisons and Reddit threads, spread thin: 98 domains in 144 citations, with no single domain in more than 26.7% of answers. A practitioner in r/ArtificialInteligence logging 926 Perplexity citations found the same YouTube pattern, with two low-view comparison videos supplying nearly half of all video citations. Popularity and citation are different things here.

Who got recommended

  • The customer was named in 6 of 15 answers and recommended in 2.
  • A tracked competitor was recommended with the customer absent in 1 answers.
  • Perplexity named neither the customer nor any tracked competitor in 6 answers.
  • Of 144 citations, 7 pointed at a customer domain and 1 at a competitor domain. The rest were third parties, which is where the fight is.

Perplexity was the least decisive engine in our customer runs: it named neither the customer nor a tracked competitor in 6 of 15 answers, and handed the answer to a competitor alone only 1 time. Wide citation panels spread the recommendation thin.

Same prompt sets, same projects, completed answers only; the Reddit column counts customer-project answers. Perplexity is the only engine that searched on every answer, and the only one where Reddit reached a fifth of them.

How Answer Radar tracks Perplexity

Four steps, and the third is the one the category skips.

Step 1

Write the questions a buyer types, not your brand name

Prompt research proposes them from your site and your competitors; you approve the set. Best X for Y, alternatives to Z, is W worth it. A brand-name prompt tells you nothing you did not already know.

Step 2

Run them against Perplexity with no steering

No system prompt, no memory, no logged-in history that has already seen your site. Each answer, its citations and its fan-out searches are stored with the run.

Step 3

Read the sources that decided each answer

For every question you lost, the page shows which URLs Perplexity read and what they said about the competitor it chose. That is the gap, and the fix is written against that page, not against a score.

Step 4

Re-run on a schedule and read the delta

Answers move between runs. Answer Radar keeps every run, so the question is never whether your number changed but whether the recommendation did, and on which prompts.

Check one question now, free

Type your brand, two competitors and a question a buyer would ask. This free check runs on Gemini and says so on the result; the paid product runs the same question on Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude and keeps every citation.

One live check at a time. Each one costs real money to run, so there is a daily cap.

Enter your brand and a real buyer question to see whether an answer engine recommends you, and who it recommends instead.

Citation, mention, recommendation, fan-out

Four words this category uses interchangeably. The tracker scores them separately because buyers experience them differently.

Perplexity citation

A source Perplexity references while composing an answer, usually a link shown beside or beneath the response. A page can be cited without your brand appearing in the text at all, and your brand can appear with no citation pointing at you.

Mention

Your brand name in the answer text. It tells you that you exist to the model. It does not tell you which page put you there or whether the buyer would pick you.

Recommendation

Perplexity putting you forward as the answer rather than listing you among options. This is what Answer Radar scores against, because it is the outcome that correlates with a buyer choosing you.

Query fan-out

The searches Perplexity runs by itself before answering. One buyer question routinely becomes several searches, and those searches, not the original prompt, decide which pages get read.

What it records, and what nobody can see

A practitioner running an AI visibility platform wrote in r/GEO_optimization that the three models do not trust the same internet, and that Perplexity cited Reddit and community discussion far more than the others. Our data agrees on the ordering and disagrees on the breadth, which is the point: measure your category, do not borrow someone else's.

Recorded on every run

  • The full answer text, stored per run, so a change in what Perplexity says is a diff you can read, not a score that moved.
  • Every URL Perplexity cited, with its domain and its position in the answer, and whether it belongs to you, to a competitor you track, or to a third party.
  • The searches Perplexity issued on its own before answering, which are rarely the words your buyer typed.
  • Each brand named in the answer, in order, and whether it was recommended or only listed. Being named eighth in a list is a mention; being the answer is a recommendation, and the two are scored separately.

Not knowable, by us or by anyone

  • How many people asked Perplexity that question. Perplexity publishes no prompt volume. Any tool quoting one is estimating.
  • Whether a Perplexity answer sent you a visit. Assistants pass little or no referrer, so traffic attribution from an answer is inference, and we do not report it as measurement.
  • Why Perplexity chose a source. We record what it searched and what it cited. The reason is a hypothesis, and the page marks it as one.
  • That your fix caused the change. Re-measurement reports the observed delta, labelled as observed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tool to track Perplexity brand mentions?+

The one that records the whole answer and every cited source per run, not just a mention count, because on Perplexity the citation list is the answer. Perplexity searched the web and cited sources in 100% of the completed answers in our runs, averaging 9.8 citations each, so a tracker that stores only whether you were named throws away most of the evidence. Answer Radar stores the answer text, all cited URLs with their position and owner, and the searches Perplexity ran, and measures the same prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude so the four are comparable.

What content are competitors using to get cited in Perplexity?+

In the 15 completed Perplexity answers from customer projects to 2026-09-04, the most cited domains were techradar.com (26.7%), youtube.com (26.7%), goconsensus.com (20%), pipeline.zoominfo.com (20%) and reddit.com (20%). Editorial reviews, YouTube comparisons, vendor comparison pages and Reddit threads, spread across 98 distinct domains in 144 citations. Only 1 citation pointed at a competitor's own domain: competitors get cited on Perplexity through third-party pages about them, not through their own sites.

Does Perplexity cite Reddit?+

Yes, more than any other engine we measure. A Reddit page was cited in 20% of customer-project Perplexity answers, against 4.5% for ChatGPT, 5% for Gemini and 0% for Claude. Practitioners in r/DigitalMarketing quoting Tinuiti data reported the same ordering, with Reddit at roughly a quarter of Perplexity citations and under one percent on Gemini. If Reddit presence is going to move an engine, it is this one.

How do I track my brand's visibility in Perplexity?+

Write the questions a buyer types before choosing in your category, run each in Perplexity without an account signed in, and record whether you were named, whether you were recommended or merely listed, and every source in the citation panel. Perplexity shows its sources openly, which makes the manual version easier than on ChatGPT and also makes the volume unmanageable by hand: ten prompts produce roughly a hundred citations per round. Answer Radar runs the set on a schedule and keeps every run.

Why does Perplexity cite so many more sources than ChatGPT?+

Because it searches on every answer and composes from what it finds, where ChatGPT answers from training when it judges the question does not need a search. In our completed answers Perplexity averaged 9.8 citations against 3.72 for ChatGPT, and it drew on 98 distinct domains in 15 customer answers where ChatGPT drew on 27 in 22. More sources means more third-party pages can put you in the answer, and more that can put a competitor there.

Can I see traffic from Perplexity in my analytics?+

More often than from ChatGPT, because Perplexity passes a referrer more consistently, and several vendors lean on that to claim attribution. Treat it as a floor, not a measurement: a referrer is dropped by apps, by in-app browsers and by privacy settings, and a recommendation that led to a branded Google search a day later leaves no trace at all. Answer Radar measures recommendation and citation, which are observable, and records referrals separately as a signal rather than a score.

What does Perplexity tracking cost with Linkeddit?+

It is part of Answer Radar, included with the Compete plan at $99 a month, with no per-engine or per-citation charge. Runs draw on a monthly credit allowance shown in the app, and the same plan carries the weekly competitor brief and demand intelligence.
