Gemini visibility tracker: who Google Gemini recommends, and which grounded sources decided it

Gemini grounds most answers in a Google search it runs on its own, then shows only some of what it read. Answer Radar asks Gemini the questions your buyers type, records the answer, every cited source and every search it ran, and tells you on which prompts a competitor was the recommendation. Then it re-runs, so a fix is measured rather than assumed.

Measured data on this page last updated 2026-09-04.

What a Gemini citation tracker is

The answer first, because this is the sentence every other definition on the page depends on.

A Gemini visibility tracker records, for each question a buyer might ask, whether Google Gemini names your brand, whether it recommends you or only lists you, and which grounded sources it cites while answering. Gemini searched the web in 93.5% of the completed answers in our runs but surfaced a citation in only 56.5%, so a tracker has to store the searches it ran as well as the sources it showed. Answer Radar measures Gemini alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude from one prompt set.

What Gemini actually did across 62 buyer questions

Read-only aggregate of every completed Gemini answer Answer Radar has run, 11 runs, to 2026-09-04. Search behaviour counts every answer; who got recommended counts the 20 answers from customer projects only, with our own brand's runs removed. A small B2B software sample, published because nobody else in this category publishes theirs.

The domains Gemini leaned on

Share of the 20 customer-project answers in which the domain was cited at least once. 74 distinct domains appeared across 96 citations.

11x.ai2 of 20 answers (10%)
aloware.com2 of 20 answers (10%)
apple.com2 of 20 answers (10%)
lorikeetcx.ai2 of 20 answers (10%)

Vendor sites and a long tail: 74 domains in 96 citations, with no domain in more than 20% of answers. Reddit appeared once, which is the near-zero share practitioners quoting Tinuiti data report for Gemini. Gemini is the engine most willing to read the vendor's own pages, so your site can put you in the answer here in a way it rarely does on ChatGPT.

Who got recommended

  • The customer was named in 12 of 20 answers and recommended in 9.
  • A tracked competitor was recommended with the customer absent in 2 answers.
  • Gemini named neither the customer nor any tracked competitor in 2 answers.
  • Of 96 citations, 7 pointed at a customer domain and 3 at a competitor domain. The rest were third parties, which is where the fight is.

Gemini was the most generous engine in our customer runs: the customer was the recommendation in 9 of 20 answers, a competitor alone in 2. A practitioner dataset shared in r/aeo found the mechanism: when the brand's own site was retrieved the brand was mentioned 89% of the time, against 24% when it was not.

Same prompt sets, same projects, completed answers only; the Reddit column counts customer-project answers. Gemini shows the widest gap between searching and citing: it grounded almost every answer and disclosed sources in just over half.

How Answer Radar tracks Gemini

Four steps, and the third is the one the category skips.

Step 1

Write the questions a buyer types, not your brand name

Prompt research proposes them from your site and your competitors; you approve the set. Best X for Y, alternatives to Z, is W worth it. A brand-name prompt tells you nothing you did not already know.

Step 2

Run them against Gemini with no steering

No system prompt, no memory, no logged-in history that has already seen your site. Each answer, its citations and its fan-out searches are stored with the run.

Step 3

Read the sources that decided each answer

For every question you lost, the page shows which URLs Gemini read and what they said about the competitor it chose. That is the gap, and the fix is written against that page, not against a score.

Step 4

Re-run on a schedule and read the delta

Answers move between runs. Answer Radar keeps every run, so the question is never whether your number changed but whether the recommendation did, and on which prompts.

Check one question now, free

This one is literal: the free check on this page sends your question to Gemini with no system prompt and returns the answer verbatim. Type your brand, two competitors and a question a buyer would ask. The paid product runs the same question on Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude on a schedule and keeps every citation.

One live check at a time. Each one costs real money to run, so there is a daily cap.

Enter your brand and a real buyer question to see whether an answer engine recommends you, and who it recommends instead.

Citation, mention, recommendation, fan-out

Four words this category uses interchangeably. The tracker scores them separately because buyers experience them differently.

Gemini citation

A source Gemini references while composing an answer, usually a link shown beside or beneath the response. A page can be cited without your brand appearing in the text at all, and your brand can appear with no citation pointing at you.

Mention

Your brand name in the answer text. It tells you that you exist to the model. It does not tell you which page put you there or whether the buyer would pick you.

Recommendation

Gemini putting you forward as the answer rather than listing you among options. This is what Answer Radar scores against, because it is the outcome that correlates with a buyer choosing you.

Query fan-out

The searches Gemini runs by itself before answering. One buyer question routinely becomes several searches, and those searches, not the original prompt, decide which pages get read.

What it records, and what nobody can see

A marketer in r/SEO_tools_reviews described sitting through two demos that showed a mention count, then typing the same prompt into the engine and finding the brand absent. That is the failure mode this page is built against: everything below is stored per run and reproducible.

Recorded on every run

  • The full answer text, stored per run, so a change in what Gemini says is a diff you can read, not a score that moved.
  • Every URL Gemini cited, with its domain and its position in the answer, and whether it belongs to you, to a competitor you track, or to a third party.
  • The searches Gemini issued on its own before answering, which are rarely the words your buyer typed.
  • Each brand named in the answer, in order, and whether it was recommended or only listed. Being named eighth in a list is a mention; being the answer is a recommendation, and the two are scored separately.

Not knowable, by us or by anyone

  • How many people asked Gemini that question. Google publishes no prompt volume. Any tool quoting one is estimating.
  • Whether a Gemini answer sent you a visit. Assistants pass little or no referrer, so traffic attribution from an answer is inference, and we do not report it as measurement.
  • Why Gemini chose a source. We record what it searched and what it cited. The reason is a hypothesis, and the page marks it as one.
  • That your fix caused the change. Re-measurement reports the observed delta, labelled as observed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Gemini visibility tracker?+

A Gemini visibility tracker records, for each question a buyer might ask, whether Google Gemini names your brand, whether it recommends you or only lists you, and which grounded sources it cites while answering. Gemini grounds most answers in a Google search it runs itself, so the sources it surfaces are what decided the answer. Answer Radar stores the answer text, the cited URLs with their owner and position, and the searches Gemini ran, and measures the same prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude so the four engines are comparable.

How can I compare platforms for Gemini citation tracking?+

Ask three things of every vendor. First, does it store the cited URLs per answer per run, or only a mention count; a count cannot tell you which page to fix. Second, does it run the prompt with no account, no memory and no system prompt, and will it show you the raw answer so you can reproduce it yourself; one practitioner in r/SEO_tools_reviews lost trust in the category after a tool reported a mention that a fresh Gemini session did not repeat. Third, does it measure the other engines on the same prompt set, because a page Gemini cites is often untouched by ChatGPT. Answer Radar publishes its own numbers on this page so you can hold it to the same test.

Is there a good Gemini brand visibility tracker I should invest in?+

Invest in one only if it changes a decision. In our 20 customer-project Gemini answers to 2026-09-04, the customer was recommended in 9 and a competitor alone in 2, which is the most generous outcome of the four engines we measure. If Gemini already recommends you on the prompts that matter, a tracker earns its cost by catching the drift; if it does not, the tracker earns it by naming the cited page that put the competitor there. Either way the useful output is a page to change, not a score to watch.

Which sources does Gemini cite?+

Spread thin and skewed to vendors. Across 96 citations in 20 customer-project answers, 74 distinct domains appeared and none was cited in more than 20% of answers; the leader was salesforce.com (20%), followed by a long tail of vendor sites at 11x.ai (10%), aloware.com (10%) and apple.com (10%). Reddit appeared in 1 citation, which matches the near-zero Reddit share for Gemini that practitioners in r/DigitalMarketing reported from Tinuiti data. Gemini reads the vendor's own site more readily than the other engines do, which cuts both ways.

Why does Gemini search but show no sources?+

Because grounding and citing are separate steps. In our 62 completed Gemini answers it searched the web in 93.5% but surfaced a citation in only 56.5%, the widest gap of the four engines. Perplexity cited in every answer it searched. When Gemini grounds silently, the answer was still shaped by pages you cannot see in the response, which is why Answer Radar records the searches it ran as well as the citations it showed.

Does tracking Gemini cover Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?+

Not yet on this page. AI Overviews and AI Mode run on Gemini models, but they are a different surface with different retrieval, and Google's own announcements at I/O 2026 merged the two into one flow inside Search. Answer Radar is adding Google AI Overviews as its own measured engine; until that page carries run data, treat Gemini results as related evidence, not as an AI Overviews measurement.

What does Gemini tracking cost with Linkeddit?+

It is part of Answer Radar, included with the Compete plan at $99 a month, with no per-engine or per-citation charge. Runs draw on a monthly credit allowance shown in the app, and the same plan carries the weekly competitor brief and demand intelligence. One Gemini check per question is free on this page, with no account.
