How to Rank in Gemini: Get Grounded, Then Cited
Gemini grounds almost every answer in a Google search and attaches a source to far fewer of them. That gap is the whole story of ranking in Gemini: there are three different rates to move, grounded, cited and recommended, and each one has a different fix. This guide separates them, shows who Gemini actually cited in our measured answers, and explains why Gemini is not the same instrument as Google AI Overviews.
Key takeaways
- Gemini searched in 95.4% of the 87 completed answers Answer Radar measured to 6 September 2026 but cited a source in only 69%. A searched answer with no citations is the most common surprise on this engine and it has its own grade.
- Gemini is not Google AI Overviews and not AI Mode. Same index, different products, different triggers, different citations. Measure them apart or you will not know which one you moved.
- Gemini's citations often arrive as opaque Google redirect links. Unless a tracker resolves them to the publisher, you cannot tell whose page decided the answer.
- In 20 customer-project answers Gemini recommended the customer 9 times and a competitor alone 2 times, the strongest customer outcome of the four assistants we measure.
- Gemini cites what Google ranks, plus YouTube. A practitioner who logged about 120,000 citations across four engines found Gemini citing whatever ranks in Google, and YouTube its single largest source on unbranded prompts.
- Schema is not a Gemini ranking factor. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD against 4,000 controls and found no material uplift in AI citations. The evidence points at passage-level answers and cited statistics instead.
Half the pages that rank for "Gemini SEO" are about using Gemini to do SEO work. This is the other half: how to get your brand into the answers Gemini gives a buyer. A long-time user in r/GeminiAI described the behaviour that makes this engine different from the outside:
“It often feels like the model searched something, skimmed the first two results and then improvised the rest. The sourcing is inconsistent and the synthesis is shallow.”
Our measured numbers say the same thing in a more forgiving way. Gemini searches nearly every time and cites far less often. Everything below follows from that gap.
1Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
No, and the confusion costs brands real measurement. Gemini is the assistant at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini app, answering a question you ask it directly. Google AI Overviews is a generated panel Google adds to the top of some results pages. AI Mode is a conversational search you open on purpose. All three sit on Google's index; none of them cites the way the others do.
| Gemini | Google AI Overviews | Google AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Google's assistant, answering a chat question | A generated summary at the top of a results page | A conversational search you open deliberately |
| When it answers | Every question | Only when Google decides an Overview is additive; often absent | Every question, with follow-ups |
| How it cites | Conditionally, when grounding attaches a source; often through Google redirect links | A short source list, often redirect links, sometimes none | Inline citations and source cards, usually many |
| Measured by Answer Radar | Yes, as its own engine | Yes, as its own engine with an appearance rate | No |

2How does Gemini decide whether to search at all?
Gemini's live web access is called grounding with Google Search. When a question comes in, the model decides whether it benefits from fresh information; if it does, Gemini generates one or more searches, runs them against Google, and writes an answer from what came back. Google's developer documentation describes a retrieval threshold for this decision, and CitedSpy's breakdown of the API notes the default sits around 0.7: below it, Gemini answers from memory.
In practice, for buying questions, Gemini almost always crosses that threshold. In the 87 completed Gemini answers Answer Radar measured to 6 September 2026, 95.4% were grounded. That is higher than ChatGPT (69%) and lower only than Perplexity, which searches every time.
One condition sits upstream of everything else. Sites that disallow the Google-Extended token in robots.txt are excluded from grounding. A page Gemini cannot read is a page Gemini cannot cite, however well it ranks in ordinary search.
3Why does Gemini search far more often than it cites?
Because grounding and citing are two steps, and the second is optional. Google's own help page for Gemini Apps, read on September 6, 2026, says sources appear "when sources are available", at the bottom of the response or inline. Gemini can run the search, use what it found, and attach nothing.
Source: Linkeddit Answer Radar, read-only aggregate over completed answers, measured 6 September 2026. The same numbers appear on the Gemini tracker page.
That 26.4 point gap is the most important number in this post. About 26% of Gemini answers to buying questions looked at the web and named nobody as their source. A tracker that counts only citations reads those as invisibility. A tracker that counts brand mentions reads them as presence. Neither is quite right.
Answer Radar gives that case its own grade, thin: the engine searched but the response carries nothing to verify against. Thin answers are excluded from presence and recommendation rates and reported separately with their reason, so the rate you read is over answers where Gemini actually showed its evidence. The r/GeminiAI poster quoted above had noticed the same thing from the other side: Gemini does it "confidently, with citations", and just as confidently without them.
4Who did Gemini actually cite?
When Gemini does cite, the link it returns is frequently not the publisher's URL. It is an opaque Google redirect that resolves to the page only when followed. A tracker that stores the redirect host records google.com as the source of every Gemini citation and learns nothing. Answer Radar follows each redirect to the real host, best effort, so the Domain column on a Gemini row names the publisher and can flag whether it is yours, a competitor's or a third party's.
In the 20 customer-project answers we measured, Gemini cited 96 URLs across 74 domains. The customer's own domain was cited 7 times and tracked competitors' domains 3 times. The most cited domains were salesforce.com, 11x.ai, aloware.com, apple.com and lorikeetcx.ai: large vendors and small ones side by side, which is why the owner of a domain matters more than its size.

Those outcomes are the best of the four assistants we measure. Gemini recommended the customer in 9 of 20 answers and a competitor alone in 2, where ChatGPT recommended a competitor alone in 8 of 22. Whether that holds for your category is exactly the thing to measure rather than assume.
5Which pages does Gemini cite?
Two outside datasets and one Reddit thread agree on the shape. A practitioner in r/GEO_optimization logged about 120,000 citations across four engines on one B2B prompt set for a month and summarised Gemini in a sentence.
“Gemini cites basically whatever ranks in Google.”
Their top Gemini domain was the brand's own site at 11.7%, followed by vertical trade publications. On a second dataset of unbranded prompts the same practitioner found YouTube was the single most-cited domain by a wide margin, overwhelmingly from Gemini and Perplexity rather than ChatGPT or Claude. Both posts came from a vendor and say so; the pattern is consistent with everything else we have seen.
By content type, CitedSpy's analysis puts blog and article pages at about 32.74% of Gemini citations and review and comparison pages at 12.17%, with product, pricing and FAQ pages together under 0.6%. Gemini cites pages that explain and compare, and almost never pages built to convert.
6Grounded, cited, recommended: three rates, three fixes
Put the pieces together and ranking in Gemini decomposes into three rates, each with a different lever.
| Rate | What it measures | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Grounded | Share of answers where Gemini searched at all | Mostly the question. Buying questions cross the threshold; definitional ones may not. Not something your pages control. |
| Cited | Share of grounded answers where a source was attached, and whose | Being in Google's index and not blocking Google-Extended; passage-level answers Gemini can attach to a sentence; comparison and explainer pages rather than product pages. |
| Recommended | Share of answers that put your brand forward as the pick | Independent corroboration: reviews, trade coverage, comparisons that name you for the buyer's case. The cited page decides this, so read which one it was. |
Most Gemini SEO advice collapses these into one, then reports one score. Keep them apart and the diagnosis writes itself: a thin row is not a page problem, a competitor-cited row is, and a row where your page is cited under a competitor recommendation is a positioning problem on the page that got cited.

7What should you change on your pages?
- 1. Let Google-Extended in. Check robots.txt and any firewall rules that classify Google's AI crawler as a bot. Blocked means not grounded, not grounded means not cited.
- 2. Write for the sentence, not the page. Gemini attaches a citation to a specific claim in its answer. A section that leads with a two-sentence answer to one sub-question gives it something to attach. A flowing essay does not.
- 3. Publish the comparison. Review and comparison pages were the second largest content type in Gemini's citations and product pages barely registered. A fair comparison that says where you fit and where you do not is the page Gemini can quote in a recommendation.
- 4. Add cited statistics. The Princeton and Georgia Tech GEO study found adding statistics raised citation rates by about 41% and citing sources by up to 115% for lower-ranked content. It is the only controlled evidence on tactics that exists.
- 5. Earn the trade mention. Gemini's source pool leans on what already ranks, and for most B2B categories what already ranks for buying questions is a trade publication or a review site. That mention is worth more here than a backlink from anywhere else.
8Does schema help you rank in Gemini?
Not measurably. The best test to date is Ahrefs', which the moderators of r/SEO posted under the title "Adding schema didn't boost citations on any platform". Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026, matched them against 4,000 control pages, and found no material uplift on Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT. Gemini the assistant was not in the study, but it reads the same index those surfaces do.
Keep your structured data valid because it costs nothing and helps ordinary search features. Do not expect it to change a Gemini citation rate, and be suspicious of any vendor who promises it will. We wrote up the wider evidence in does schema help AI citations.
9How do you measure Gemini visibility?
Four rules that follow from how the engine behaves.
- 1. Measure Gemini as Gemini. Not pooled with Google AI Overviews, not pooled with AI Mode. Different products, different denominators.
- 2. Grade the thin answers, do not hide them. An answer that searched and cited nothing is neither a miss nor a hit. Report it with its reason and keep it out of the rate.
- 3. Resolve the redirects. If your tracker's Gemini source list is a column of google.com links, it is not telling you who decided the answer.
- 4. Freeze the question set and re-run. Profound measured monthly citation drift on Gemini at 59.3%, the highest of the engines it studied. One check is one observation.
This is how Answer Radar reports Gemini, and the help guide on tracking and winning Gemini walks through reading a thin row, a redirect-resolved publisher and a competitor recommendation. The free check on the tracker page runs one question against Gemini so you can reproduce a single row by hand before you trust any run.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews?+
No. Gemini is Google's assistant, answering a question you ask it directly. Google AI Overviews is a generated panel that appears at the top of a Google results page for some searches and not others. Both use Google's search index, but they are different products with different triggers and different citation behaviour, and a measurement that pools them tells you nothing about either. Answer Radar measures them as two separate engines.
Does Gemini always search the web before answering?+
Almost always in our data. In the 87 completed Gemini answers Answer Radar measured to 6 September 2026, 95.4% were grounded in a Google search. The grounding decision is Gemini's own: Google's developer documentation describes a retrieval threshold that turns grounding on when the model predicts a query benefits from fresh information.
Why does Gemini answer without citing any sources?+
Because grounding and citing are separate steps. Gemini can run a search, use what it found, and still attach no source to the answer. Google's help page says sources appear when they are available. In our measured answers 95.4% of Gemini answers searched but only 69% cited anything, so a searched answer with no citations is the single most common surprise on this engine.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my site from Gemini answers?+
Google-Extended is the robots.txt token that controls whether Google may use your pages for its AI products, including Gemini grounding. Sites that disallow it are excluded from grounding, which means they cannot be cited. It does not affect your ordinary Google Search ranking. If you want Gemini citations, do not block it.
Does schema markup help you rank in Gemini?+
There is no controlled evidence that it does. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026 against 4,000 matched controls and found no material uplift in citations on Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT. Structured data is reasonable housekeeping; the levers with evidence behind them are passage-level answers, cited statistics and independent corroboration.
How do I tell whether Gemini recommended me or just cited my page?+
Read the answer text. A citation means Gemini used your page as evidence; a recommendation means the answer puts you forward as the pick. Answer Radar stores both for every question and reports them separately, with the publisher behind each of Gemini's redirect links resolved so you can see whose page decided the answer.
