Google AI Overviews vs AI Mode: What Differs for Brands
Google now runs two generative surfaces inside Search, and they share a name more than they share sources. This guide separates them: what each one is, how each triggers and cites, what Google changed at I/O 2026, and how a brand measures each one honestly, including which of the two Answer Radar measures and which it does not.
Key takeaways
- AI Overviews are a summary Google adds to a normal results page for some searches only. AI Mode is a separate conversational search you enter deliberately and it answers every question. Google's own documentation says the two may use different models and techniques, so the links they show will vary.
- They agree on the answer and disagree on the sources. Ahrefs compared 540,000 query pairs and found only 13.7% of cited URLs overlapped, while 86% of response pairs meant the same thing. A citation in one surface is not evidence of a citation in the other.
- AI Mode is a bibliography and AI Overviews are a shortlist. Moz found 96% of AI Mode responses carry at least one citation, 91% cite ten or more URLs, and 88% of those URLs sit outside the organic top ten for the exact query.
- At I/O 2026 Google made a search flow from an AI Overview into an AI Mode follow-up, and by late August it confirmed some Overviews expand into a fuller AI Mode style answer by default. The surfaces are converging in the interface, not in the sources.
- Measure each surface on its own denominator. An AI Overview can be absent, so any visibility number for it has an appearance rate underneath. AI Mode always answers. Answer Radar measures AI Overviews as a fifth engine and does not measure AI Mode.
The confusion is understandable. Both surfaces are generated by Google, both cite web pages, and since May 2026 a single search can start in one and end in the other. The trouble starts when they are reported as one thing. A site owner on r/SEO put it this way after Google confirmed that AI Mode turns appear inside the ordinary Search Console query list:
“Been feeling like impressions, CTR, and positions are all unreliable with the AI data lumped in. I really wish it was separated.”
This guide separates them. Every number below carries its source and the date we read it, and the section on Answer Radar states what we measure and what we do not.
1What is the difference between Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
An AI Overview is a generated summary that Google places at the top of a standard results page, for some queries and not others, with a short set of source links beneath it. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience that a person opens on purpose, which splits the question into sub-searches, writes a longer answer, and invites follow-ups. Google's Search Central documentation, read on September 6, 2026, states the split directly: both surfaces "may use a query fan-out technique," but "AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary. AI Overviews are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger."
Google's help page for AI Mode describes it as something that "expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning and ways of interacting", dividing a question into subtopics and searching each at the same time. You reach it at google.com/ai, through the AI Mode tab, or in the Google app. The same page notes that a search which begins with an Overview and continues through "Dive deeper in AI Mode" is written to your history as two entries. Google itself treats them as two events.
| Google AI Overviews | Google AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | At the top of a standard Google results page, above the organic results | Its own conversational view, reached from google.com/ai, the AI Mode tab, or by continuing from an Overview |
| How it triggers | Only on queries where Google decides it is additive to classic Search. Google says it often does not trigger | On demand. The person opens it and it answers every question, then keeps answering follow-ups |
| How it cites | A short list of source links, on many searches shown as Google redirect links. Ahrefs found 11% of Overviews carried no citation at all | Inline citations and source cards. Moz found 96% of responses cite at least one URL and 91% cite ten or more |
| Length and brands named | Shorter. About 1.3 named people, organisations or brands per response (Ahrefs) | About four times longer. About 3.3 named entities per response (Ahrefs) |
| What it means for a brand | Two questions per query: did an Overview appear, and were we in it. Absence is data, not a zero | One question per prompt, but the answer runs long and the citation list is wide, so a mention can sit far from the top |
| Measured by Answer Radar | Yes, as the fifth engine, from a rendered desktop results page per country | No. Answer Radar does not measure AI Mode today |
2Do AI Overviews and AI Mode cite the same sources?
Mostly not. Ahrefs ran the largest public comparison we could find, published December 15, 2025 on September 2025 US data: 540,000 query pairs for citation analysis and 730,000 for content analysis, each pair holding an AI Overview and an AI Mode response to the same query. The two surfaces cited the same URL only 13.7% of the time, 16.3% when only the top three citations were compared. Yet the responses scored 86% on semantic similarity, and nearly nine in ten pairs scored above 0.8. Same answer, different bibliography.
Sources, read September 6, 2026: Ahrefs, Are AI Mode and AI Overviews just different versions of the same thing and Moz, Only 12% of AI Mode citations match URLs in the organic SERP.
The rest of the Ahrefs data explains why the surfaces feel similar while citing differently. AI Mode responses ran about four times longer, named 3.3 entities on average against 1.3, and 61% of the time included every entity the Overview had named before adding more. Brand mentions travel between the surfaces better than citations do. Only 3% of AI Mode responses lacked citations against 11% of Overviews, and a large share of both named no brand at all, 59.41% of Overviews and 34.66% of AI Mode responses.
Moz's study, published February 18, 2026 on nearly 40,000 US and UK queries, adds the shape of AI Mode's citation list. 96% of responses carried at least one citation and 91% cited ten or more URLs, yet only 12% of those URLs matched the organic top ten for the exact query, about one in five at the domain level. The top four domains held 10% of all citations, with Wikipedia first and YouTube second. Moz's conclusion is the right frame: AI Mode behaves like a bibliography, not a top ten.
Two caveats keep this honest. Ahrefs notes that 45% of AI Overview citations change between generations, so a single snapshot understates how much the two source pools could overlap. And domain preferences differ: YouTube led in Overviews, Wikipedia was cited 10% more often in AI Mode, Reddit at similar rates in both, Quora 3.5 times more often in AI Mode. Ahrefs' closing advice is ours too: treat them as separate channels with overlapping goals but different execution.
3What did Google change at I/O 2026, and are the two surfaces merging?
In the interface, yes. In the sources, there is no evidence of it. Item 18 of Google's own list of 100 things announced at I/O 2026, published May 20, 2026, describes "bringing AI Overviews and AI Mode into one, seamless AI Search experience. You can flow effortlessly from your question, to a search results page with an AI Overview, to a follow-up in AI Mode, all with links to learn more," live on desktop and mobile worldwide. That is the claim our AI Overviews tracker page makes, and we re-checked it against this primary source before repeating it here.
The scale numbers came from the same stage. Sundar Pichai's keynote transcript puts AI Overviews at over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode past 1 billion about a year after launch, and item 16 of the announcements list says AI Mode queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch. Those are Google's figures about Google's products, so read them as scale, not as independent measurement.
The convergence continued after I/O. In late August 2026 Search Engine Roundtable reported, with a statement from Google, that for some queries the AI Overview now loads a much fuller AI Mode style answer with the "Ask anything" box open by default, with no "Show more" click required. Google's spokesperson: "For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it's most useful for people." The organic results move further down the page when that happens.
For a brand, the entry point is blurring while the two answer systems stay distinct: a person who starts on a results page may now finish in AI Mode without choosing it, and that session cites a different set of pages. The r/SEO thread on the change had the most useful operational advice we saw:
“I'd watch which query types lose clicks first. Split informational vs commercial queries in GSC and compare CTR and conversions. If AI Mode mostly eats informational clicks while money pages hold, that's a very different problem than a sitewide traffic decline.”
4Why does the difference change how a brand measures each surface?
Because the two surfaces have different denominators, Google's own reporting does not separate them, and the links inside them are no longer plain URLs. Each of those breaks a pooled number in a different way.
The appearance denominator. An AI Overview is absent on many queries, so a brand's "visibility in AI Overviews" silently mixes how often an Overview appeared with how often the brand was in it. An agency AMA in r/aeo reported 31% AI Overviews visibility for a client, "likely because not every search shows an AI overview," and a reply named the flaw.
“So that number is partly measuring overview trigger rate, not brand presence. Two different quantities folded into one percentage.”
AI Mode has no equivalent problem, because it always answers. So the right unit for an Overview is a pair of numbers, appearance rate and presence given appearance, while the right unit for AI Mode is a single presence rate across prompts. Averaging the two produces a figure that describes neither.
Search Console pools them. Google's Search Central documentation says sites appearing in AI features are counted inside the Performance report under the Web search type, alongside classic results. The dedicated generative AI performance report Google began rolling out on June 3, 2026 reports impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for both surfaces together, with no clicks and no queries. A commenter on the r/SEO thread about that launch drew the line the report cannot: "you can be summarised without being the named reference." Another site owner reported that generative AI impressions "tripled August 1st ... from 5K daily to 15K, with no traffic increase at all."
The links are wrapped. In every AI Overview we recorded on September 6, 2026, the source links arrived as google.com/goto redirect tokens rather than the destination URL, with the publisher named only in a label beside each one. A post in r/GEO_optimization from late August described the same change and its consequence for anyone reading a results page at scale: "every link is now a redirect hop instead of something you can just read off the page." For measurement that means a tracker which stops at the wrapper is counting Google, not the publisher. The redirect has to be resolved before a citation can be attributed to anyone.
The opt-out is one switch. Google's Search generative AI control, rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026, covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI in Discover with one setting, and Google says it is not a ranking signal elsewhere. There is no way to leave one surface and stay in the other, so know how each is performing before touching the toggle.
5How does Answer Radar measure AI Overviews, and why does it not measure AI Mode?
Answer Radar measures Google AI Overviews as its fifth engine, beside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and it does not measure AI Mode. Here is exactly what the AI Overviews measurement does, as verified in our own code on September 6, 2026.
- It reads a rendered desktop Google results page, per country. Each tracked prompt runs as a real search in the customer's chosen geography, and the Overview is read from the rendered page, not from an API that approximates it.
- It records absence. A clean page with no Overview is stored as a finding about the engine, not an error and not zero visibility, and shown and absent samples sit in the same segment so the appearance rate has an honest denominator. Countries where Google serves no Overviews are marked blocked before any request is spent.
- It attributes Google's redirect links to the publisher. Sources often arrive as redirect tokens. Answer Radar reads the publisher Google labels each source with, attributes the citation to that publisher, and does not count the same publisher twice when it is cited inline and in the source panel.
One observed check, dated and single: on September 6, 2026 the US query "best CRM for small business" returned an AI Overview naming Zoho CRM as its top overall pick alongside HubSpot CRM, Pipedrive, Salesforce Starter Suite and Bigin, citing eight sources including reddit.com, pcmag.com and two salesforce.com pages. That is one query on one day in one country, and Google regenerates Overviews, so the point is the shape rather than the ranking: a shortlist of products, a handful of sources, vendor pages beside review and community pages.
Why not AI Mode? Because a measurement must stay comparable across customers and across time, and AI Mode is a personalised, multi-turn session: Google's help page describes it referencing previous searches and, where connected, Gmail and Photos. It has no absence state, the citation list runs to dozens of URLs, and the second turn can drop a brand the first turn named. We would rather be explicit about the surface we do not read than sell a blended number. For teams that need AI Mode today, Rankscale tracks it, as we noted in our Rankscale review, and Google's generative AI performance report covers AI Mode impressions where it has rolled out.

6What should a brand do about each surface this quarter?
Three moves, one per surface and one for both, each of which you can finish in a quarter without new headcount.
- 1. For AI Overviews, measure appearance before presence. List the informational, question-shaped queries in your category, then find out how often an Overview appears for each before you ask whether you are in it. The queries with a high appearance rate and no mention of you are the gaps worth a page. The mechanics of earning the citation are in how to show up in Google AI Overviews.
- 2. For AI Mode, think in journeys, not keywords. A commenter on the r/SEO thread about Google's own AI Mode usage data put it well: "I wouldn't treat AI Mode like normal keyword tracking. The better report is probably what prompts trigger us, what follow-ups drop us, and where the answer misrepresents us." Use Google's generative AI report where you have it, watch for conversational fragments in the ordinary query list, and keep the pages AI Mode reaches for, comparison, reference and video, accurate and current, because it cites well past the top ten.
- 3. For both, split before you decide anything. Separate informational from commercial queries in Search Console and compare clicks and conversions. Do not touch the generative AI opt-out until you have that split, because it removes you from both surfaces at once. If you must test it, take the r/SEO approach: opt out one informational cluster for thirty days and watch branded and direct traffic, not just organic CTR.
The through-line is the one in measuring AI search visibility honestly: name the surface, name the denominator, label the conditions, and trust a re-checked result over any standalone score.
Frequently asked questions
Are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?+
No. An AI Overview is a generated summary Google adds to the top of a normal results page, and only for some searches. AI Mode is a separate conversational search a person opens on purpose, at google.com/ai, through the AI Mode tab, or by continuing from an Overview, and it answers every question with follow-ups. Google's documentation says the two may use different models and techniques and that the links they show will vary. Since I/O 2026 one search can flow from an Overview into AI Mode, so they share an interface while remaining two surfaces with different sources.
Does Google AI Mode show citations?+
Yes, heavily. Moz analysed nearly 40,000 AI Mode responses across the US and UK and found 96% included at least one citation and 91% cited ten or more URLs. Ahrefs found only 3% of AI Mode responses lacked citations, against 11% of AI Overviews. The catch for brands is where those citations come from: Moz found 88% of AI Mode citations were not in the organic top ten for the exact query, because AI Mode fans a question out into related sub-searches and cites across all of them.
If my brand is cited in AI Overviews, will it also appear in AI Mode?+
Not reliably. Ahrefs compared 540,000 query pairs and found the two surfaces cited the same URL only 13.7% of the time, even though their answers were semantically similar 86% of the time. Brand mentions travel better than citations: 61% of the time AI Mode named every entity the Overview named and then added more. Treat a citation in one surface as evidence about that surface only, and check the other one directly.
Does a citation in an AI Overview or AI Mode count as a click or impression in Search Console?+
It counts as an impression, and as a click only if someone follows the link to your site. Google's documentation says sites appearing in AI features are included in the Performance report under the Web search type, pooled with classic results. The separate generative AI performance report Google began rolling out in June 2026 shows impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for both surfaces together, with no clicks and no queries. Being summarised without being linked produces no impression at all.
Can I see AI Mode queries in Google Search Console?+
Not as a labelled segment. The generative AI performance report has no query dimension, and the main Performance report pools AI Mode with everything else. What site owners in r/SEO have noticed is that conversational strings such as follow-up replies and 'yes, pricing' style fragments show up in the query list, which are almost certainly AI Mode turns. That is a hint, not a report. For a per-prompt view you need a tool that renders the surface itself.
Why does Answer Radar measure AI Overviews but not AI Mode?+
Because we can measure AI Overviews in a way that stays comparable across customers and time, and we cannot yet promise that for AI Mode. Answer Radar reads a rendered desktop Google results page per country, records whether an Overview appeared at all, and resolves Google's redirect links to the publisher behind them. AI Mode is a personalised, multi-turn session with no absence state, which makes a repeatable reading harder. So we report AI Overviews as its own engine and say plainly that AI Mode is not covered. Rankscale, which we reviewed, does track AI Mode.
