Google AI Overviews by Country: Availability and Tracking

Google AI Overviews reach more than 200 countries, but they do not appear at the same rate in each, and in a few they do not appear at all. That makes a brand's Overview visibility a per-country question. This guide maps where AI Overviews run, why one may not show where you are, and how to measure your brand without pooling countries into a number that means nothing.

Key takeaways

  • Google says AI Overviews are available in more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages (May 2025). France, the last major Western European market, went live on 22 July 2026. China, Iran, Cuba and North Korea were not on Google's availability list on 6 September 2026.
  • An Overview that does not show has three different causes: the region is not launched or launched with conditions, the query did not trigger one (Google says they often do not), or something on the client hid it. Only the first is about your country.
  • Trigger rates vary widely by country. Ahrefs found an Overview on 37.2% of keywords in Indonesia, 20.5% in the United States, 19.1% in the United Kingdom and 8.7% in Greece across 108 million queries.
  • The right unit of measurement is a segment: one engine, one geography, one language. Report how often an Overview appeared (the appearance rate) separately from whether you were in it, and never add countries together.
  • Search Console counts AI Overview traffic inside the Web search type with no separate filter, so a per-country appearance measurement has to be taken on the results page itself.

The question arrives in two forms. A marketer in Vancouver asks why the Overviews that appeared last week have vanished. A team in Paris asks what their July traffic drop has to do with a feature they had never seen. Both are asking the same thing: is Google's AI Overview a single global surface, or a different surface in every country? The evidence says the second, and that changes how you should measure it.

The first few days after the launch was great but I can't seem to generate the AIO anymore. I'm using the exact same queries as I did a few days ago, and AIO not displaying. I'm in Canada, anyone else the same?

1Which countries have Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are available in more than 200 countries and territories and in more than 40 languages, according to Google's announcement of 20 May 2025. The authoritative list lives on Google's Search help page, which on 6 September 2026 named every major market in the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Four countries with large populations were absent from that list on that date: China, Iran, Cuba and North Korea.

The rollout happened in waves, and the wave matters because a country's launch date is also the date its search behaviour started to change. Each row below cites Google's own post or the primary report for that step.

One caution about Google's own copy. On the same day, the consumer page at search.google still read "currently available in over 120 countries and territories, and 11 languages," a figure two expansions out of date. Treat the help page list as the record and the marketing pages as history.

2Why is the AI Overview not showing in my country?

An absent Overview has three unrelated causes, and only one of them is about your country. First, your results region may not be launched, or launched with conditions: the nine European countries added in March 2025 began with signed-in users aged 18 and over, per Google's Europe post, so a logged-out browser in Berlin saw nothing while a logged-in one did. Second, the query may not trigger one anywhere. Google's Search Central documentation states that AI Overviews "are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger." Third, something on the client hides it: an ad blocker, the Web filter, or a "-ai" suffix.

The practical problem is that all three look identical on screen, so people reach for the country explanation first. The Hong Kong version of the question, from May 2024, is a good example of how hard it is to see another country's results from where you sit:

I live in Hong Kong and we don't have Overview AI for Google queries...yet. I need to see how certain queries that I am targeting load in the US but if I use a VPN I still don't see the Overview AI (Generative) feature.
via r/bigseo

The same confusion shows up in reporting tools. When Search Console began showing a generative AI report in mid 2026, a German site owner assumed the missing panel was a regional delay ("I thought maybe it gets rolled out to me late because I am in a specific country"), and the replies split between "you just have to wait" and "Google rolls out most updates starting in the US" (r/SEO, July 2026). Nobody in the thread could distinguish a regional gate from a staggered rollout from a query that never triggers, because nothing they were looking at recorded which one it was. That is a measurement gap, not a Google mystery, and the rest of this guide is about closing it.

3When did AI Overviews reach Europe, and what changed in France?

Europe got AI Overviews in two steps a year and a half apart. Nine countries launched on 25 March 2025: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, each with a named language set (Switzerland in French, German, Italian and English). France, the largest omission, followed on 22 July 2026, receiving AI Overviews and AI Mode on the same day according to We Are ROAST and Le Monde. In June 2024 the prevailing view on r/google had been that Europe would not see the feature "for the foreseeable future" because "the EU is more hawkish with AI in general"; nine months later most of the EEA had it.

France's late arrival produced the clearest natural experiment in the whole rollout. For over a year, its absence was so reliable that people used it as an off switch:

It works because AI overview isn't available in France, so they may change it eventually, but for now it works. It will automatically disable AI overview on every search.
via r/google

Two days after the French launch, the same trick stopped working, and the people who had relied on it noticed before most SEO tooling did:

Many of you probably knew of the previous way to avoid AI overview on Google (the method was switching the search results region to France). It worked for months but I just tried to search something and AI overview came up.
via r/antiai

For a brand, the important part is what happened to French traffic. One independent French review site compared two matched weeks either side of 22 July and reported clicks from Google down 25% with impressions flat, and CTR on a query it ranked first for falling from 54.5% to 16.7% (r/SEO, August 2026). That is one site and one fortnight, so treat it as an anecdote, not a rate. But it illustrates the point of this article: a French brand's AI Overview exposure went from zero to real on a single day, while a German brand's had been real for sixteen months. Any "European" visibility figure that averaged the two would have described neither.

4Does the AI Overview trigger rate differ by country?

Yes, and by more than most teams expect. Ahrefs analysed 108 million AI Overview queries from its Brand Radar index in November 2025 and ranked countries by the share of keywords that returned an Overview. Indonesia led at 37.2%, the Philippines and Mexico followed at 29.1%, India at 26.8% and Brazil at 25.2%. The United States sat in 13th place at 20.5%, with Canada (19.2%) and the United Kingdom (19.1%) in 17th and 18th. At the bottom of the top 50 were Ireland (12.0%), Switzerland (10.4%) and Greece (8.7%).

Language compounds the geography. In the same dataset, English accounted for 52.75% of all AI Overviews worldwide, Spanish for 11.48%, Portuguese for 5.01%, Japanese for 4.37% and German for 3.82%. A German buyer researching software in English, which is common in technology procurement, sits in a different segment from the same buyer searching in German, with a different chance of seeing an Overview and a different set of sources inside it. This is why the segment has to carry the language as well as the country.

The consequence for a brand is arithmetic. If Overviews appear on roughly one in five relevant searches in the United Kingdom and one in twelve in Greece, then the same content, cited in the same proportion of Overviews wherever they appear, produces very different real exposure in each market. A visibility score that ignores the denominator hides that difference, and a score that pools the two countries invents a third market that does not exist.

5How do you measure AI Overview visibility per country?

Measure per segment, where a segment is one engine, one geography and one language, and record two things in order: whether an Overview appeared at all, and only then whether your brand was in it. The first number is the appearance rate, the share of searches that showed an Overview out of all searches that either showed one or did not. The second is presence, and it is only defined over the searches where an Overview existed. Reporting presence without the appearance rate is how a brand ends up with a healthy-looking score in a country where Overviews barely trigger.

This is how Linkeddit's Answer Radar treats Google AI Overviews, the fifth engine it measures beside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Each run loads a rendered desktop Google results page localized to the run's geography, a country, with the United States as the default. When Google shows an Overview, the run records who it recommended and which publishers it cited. When Google shows nothing, the run records an absence with the reason "not shown," which is a real observation, not a failure and not zero visibility. Provider errors are a third status and sit on neither side of the appearance rate. Results are never pooled across countries.

The appearance side is not theoretical. Two single checks in the United States on 6 September 2026 show how close together a triggering and a non-triggering query can be: "best CRM for small business" returned an Overview citing eight sources, while "What are the best CRM tools for a small business in 2026?" returned none. Those are two dated observations, not rates, and that is the point: any one check is a coin flip, which is why an appearance rate has to be built from many samples per segment before it is worth reading. One r/SEO commenter arrived at the same method from the other direction:

If you want to know whether you're actually getting cited, just sample it: ask the same query 20ish times and count how often you show up, like a poll.
via r/SEO

Two things Search Console cannot do for you here. Google's documentation says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is "included in the overall search traffic" under the Web search type, so the country filter in the Performance report tells you where clicks came from but not whether an Overview was on the page. And it cannot record absence at all: a query that showed no Overview in Canada today leaves no trace. Search Console remains the ground truth for the click; the appearance measurement has to come from the results page. The broader argument for measuring specific questions under labeled conditions is in how to measure AI search visibility honestly.

6What should a brand that sells in several countries do?

Treat each country you sell in as its own AI Overview market, with its own availability, its own appearance rate and its own trend. The sequence is short.

  • 1. List the geographies that carry revenue. Not regions, countries. "EMEA" contains Germany (live since March 2025), France (live since July 2026) and Iran (not listed), and no single number describes all three.
  • 2. Check each against Google's availability list. Use the help page, not a vendor summary or a marketing page; Google updates it faster than anyone else, and the older marketing copy was two expansions stale when we checked.
  • 3. Run one segment per country and language you care about. A buyer in Zurich searching in German and one searching in English are two segments. If you cannot afford every combination, pick the language your buyers actually type, which is usually visible in your Search Console query report by country.
  • 4. Read the appearance rate before the presence rate. A country where Overviews appear on 8% of your questions is a different problem from one where they appear on 30% and you are absent from them. The first needs patience; the second needs work.
  • 5. Compare a country with itself over time, never with another country. Ireland at 12% versus Indonesia at 37% is a fact about Google, not about your content. Ireland this month versus Ireland last month is a fact about you.
  • 6. Watch for launches. The day France went live, every French segment changed its denominator. The same will happen wherever Google launches next, and the only way to see it is a blocked geography turning into a live one in your own data.

Measure Google AI Overviews per country, next to the four answer engines

Answer Radar runs your buyers' questions against a rendered Google results page localized to each geography you sell in, records whether an Overview appeared, who it recommended and which sources it cited, and reports the appearance rate per segment beside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Countries are never pooled, absences are never zeros, and blocked geographies are marked as such.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries have Google AI Overviews?+

As of Google's May 2025 announcement, AI Overviews are available in more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages. Google's Search help page keeps the full list; on 6 September 2026 it named every major market in the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, including France, which launched on 22 July 2026. China, Iran, Cuba and North Korea did not appear on the list that day.

Why are AI Overviews not showing for me?+

Three different causes look the same on screen. Your results region may be one Google has not launched in or has launched with conditions (the nine European countries added in March 2025 started with signed-in users aged 18 and over). Your query may simply not trigger one: Google says AI Overviews are shown only when its systems decide they add to classic Search and so often do not trigger. Or the Overview is being removed client-side, for example by an ad blocker or the Web filter. Check the region setting and the query before concluding the feature is off.

Are AI Overviews available in France?+

Yes, since 22 July 2026. France was the last major Western European market to receive AI Overviews and AI Mode; the other nine EEA launch countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland) went live in March 2025. Before July 2026 France's absence was well known enough that people switched their Google results region to France to hide Overviews, and that trick stopped working the week of the launch.

Do AI Overviews appear more often in some countries than others?+

Yes, by a wide margin. Ahrefs analysed 108 million AI Overview queries in November 2025 and found an Overview on 37.2% of keywords in Indonesia, 26.8% in India, 20.5% in the United States (13th place), 19.2% in Canada, 19.1% in the United Kingdom, 18.7% in Germany, 12.0% in Ireland and 8.7% in Greece. Two brands with identical content face different denominators depending on where their buyers search.

How do I measure my brand's AI Overview visibility in a specific country?+

Load a results page localized to that country, record whether an Overview appeared at all, and only then record whether your brand or your pages were in it. Report the appearance rate (searches with an Overview divided by searches with or without one) separately from presence inside the Overviews that did appear, and keep every country as its own segment. Answer Radar does this against a rendered desktop Google results page per geography, and never pools countries into one figure.

Can Google Search Console show AI Overview performance by country?+

Not as a separate view. Google's documentation says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the overall Performance report under the Web search type, so Search Console can filter clicks and impressions by country but cannot tell you which of them came from an Overview or whether one appeared. A per-country appearance measurement has to be taken on the results page itself.
