Semrush + Linkeddit

Semrush competitor analysis in Claude with Linkeddit

For a Semrush competitor analysis in Claude, use the Semrush connector for each rival's organic keywords, domain metrics and backlinks, and Linkeddit for who actually ranks in the Google top 10 on your tracked keywords and which AI engines cite them. Claude joins the two, lists the topics where a page of yours is missing and ranks them by how weak the competition looks. You decide which to write.

The prompt

Paste into Claude

Use the Linkeddit connector and the Semrush connector to run a competitor analysis for my domain. 1) With Linkeddit search_competitors_get, view=footprint, list the competing domains for my tracked keywords: how many keywords each has in the Google top 10, its average position, on how many it beats me and how often AI Overviews and each AI engine cite it. 2) With Linkeddit search_research_get, view=topics, list my topics with the action gap, striking_distance and cannibalised and the competing URLs. 3) For the five strongest competitors, use Semrush competitors_research, domain_overview, organic_research and backlinks_research to size each one. Request only the rows you need to save API units. 4) Rank the topics by how winnable they look, weakest competitors first, with the reason from the data. Keep Linkeddit numbers and Semrush numbers labeled separately and do not estimate any value a connector did not return.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Connect both connectors to Claude

Add the Semrush connector and the Linkeddit connector (https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp) in Claude or Claude Code. Neither workflow step changes anything in your accounts.

  2. Step 2

Pull who ranks on your keywords

Ask Claude for search_competitors_get. It returns each competing domain with its top 10 keyword count, average position, the keywords where it beats you and its AI Overview and AI engine citations. Pass a domain to get one competitor's winning pages.

  3. Step 3

    Pull the topic actions

Ask for search_research_get with view=topics. Each topic is labeled gap, striking_distance, protected, cannibalised or hold, with the competing URLs.

  4. Step 4

    Size the rivals in Semrush

Have Claude read organic keywords, domain metrics and backlinks for the strongest competitors through the Semrush connector. Semrush's guide suggests asking for specific reports, because every MCP call uses API units.

  5. Step 5

    Interpret and decide

Ask Claude to weigh the gaps by intent and by the content format that is winning, then write a shortlist with the reason for each. Pick the pages that fit your business.

What Linkeddit returned

Run live on 2026-10-29 with search_competitors_get. Read-only run on Linkeddit's own test project (plausible.io, a privacy analytics site). It shows the competitor footprint and topic rows Claude would size in Semrush. Three of 358 domains and three of 53 topics are shown, trimmed.

How do you do a competitor analysis with Claude and Semrush?

Semrush's guide pairs a live data source with an AI that can query it: the Semrush MCP and Claude Code. You tell Claude your goal, give it your site and a short list of competitor URLs, then ask it to pull organic keywords, domain metrics and backlink data for each one. Because the data comes through MCP, Semrush notes you do not export CSVs or switch tabs.

If you do not have a competitor list, the guide goes the other way: give Claude the keywords you want to rank for and let the Semrush MCP pull the domains already ranking for them, which gives you your search competitors rather than the companies you think of as rivals.

Who are your real search competitors?

Rankings answer it better than a guess. On the test project, across 59 checked keywords, reddit.com had a Google top 10 page on 44 of them at an average position of 2.34 and ranked above plausible.io on 41. posthog.com had 12 and matomo.org had 11. A forum domain and a software rival compete in different ways, so ask Claude to keep them as separate lists.

The footprint also shows AI answers. matomo.org was cited by Google AI Overviews on 11 of the checked keywords and, in the project's latest finished answer run, by ChatGPT 21 times. Semrush data can size a rival's traffic and backlinks, and the Linkeddit footprint shows where that rival is being recommended.

What should Claude interpret rather than list?

Semrush's guide makes a point worth keeping: do not just ask Claude for keyword gaps, because Semrush's Keyword Gap tool already does that faster. Use the AI to interpret them. It suggests weighting gaps by intent, since 200 keywords a competitor ranks for matters little if most are low intent, and comparing content formats, since a comparison page beating your blog post says more than the gap itself.

Linkeddit adds the topic view. search_research_get groups keywords whose Google results share at least 3 of the same top 10 pages and labels each topic. A gap means you have no page in the top 20 and a competitor page is in the top 10: betterlytics is one in the test run. A cannibalised topic means two of your own URLs compete: simple analytics alternative, best rank 3.

The point holds for Semrush data too. "Real competitive intelligence is not a list of names," said a Claude user on Reddit. Claude should turn the domain and keyword lists into a view of who wins which questions, not hand the list back.

What are the limits of this analysis?

Linkeddit's numbers come from the keywords you track and the checks already run, so here the footprint covers 59 keywords and 47 AI answer samples, not the whole market. Semrush calls use API units, and its plans list 50,000 included units, so a broad pull for five rivals is not free.

Neither connector writes advice. Claude ranks the topics by how weak the competition looks and shows the evidence, and you judge which gaps fit your business. Rerun it monthly and compare: a rival gaining top 10 keywords, or a topic moving from gap to striking_distance after you publish, is the signal worth reading.

How do you read a competitor's content strategy?

Semrush's guide asks Claude which pages are doing the heavy lifting for each competitor, because a few pages usually carry most of a rival's organic traffic. Those are the pages worth studying, and the Semrush organic research tool is where that traffic estimate comes from.

Linkeddit's content_map view of search_competitors_get answers a different question: how a rival builds its site. It reads the competitor's public sitemap and groups pages into editorial sections, such as articles and guides, and templated sections, many pages built from one pattern. Ask Claude to compare both before copying a rival's format.

Pair the two views before acting. If a rival's winning pages sit in a templated section and your topic is a gap, a single strong editorial page may still beat it. If the rival earns its pages one by one, expect a longer fight. Ask Claude to state which case each shortlisted topic is, with the evidence.

Frequently asked questions

How do I do competitor analysis with Claude and Semrush?+

Connect the Semrush connector, give Claude your site and competitor URLs or your target keywords, and ask for organic keywords, domain metrics and backlinks for each rival. Semrush advises asking for specific reports because each call uses API units. Add Linkeddit to see who ranks on your keywords and which AI engines cite them.

What is the best tool for competitor analysis in Claude?+

Pair Semrush for each rival's keywords, domain metrics and backlinks with Linkeddit, at $60 a month, for who ranks in the Google top 10 on your tracked keywords, where each beats you and how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews cite it. Claude then ranks the gaps by how weak the competition is.

Can Claude find my competitors from keywords alone?+

Yes. Semrush's guide says that if you have no competitor list, you can give Claude the keywords you want to rank for and let the Semrush MCP pull the domains already ranking for them. Linkeddit does the same from your tracked keywords and also shows which of those domains the AI engines cite.

Why use Claude when Semrush has a Keyword Gap tool?+

Semrush's own guide says its Keyword Gap tool already finds gaps faster than Claude, and that the AI is for interpreting them: weighting by intent, comparing content formats and finding which pages carry a competitor's traffic. Claude adds judgment on top of the tool's output, not a replacement for it.

What does a keyword gap mean in Linkeddit?+

A gap is a topic where you have no page in the top 20 for any of its keywords and at least one competitor page is in the top 10. Topics group keywords whose Google results share at least 3 of the same top 10 pages. search_research_get labels them so Claude can list gaps first.

Does this work in ChatGPT?+

These steps were written and tested for Claude and Claude Code. Semrush documents a ChatGPT setup for its own app, but the combined workflow on this page has not been written for ChatGPT, and tool behavior can differ between clients. Do not assume the same prompt carries over unchanged.

What is the best way to find who really competes with me in Google and AI answers?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month, lists every domain with a Google top 10 page on your tracked keywords, its average position, where it beats you and how often each AI engine cites it. On the test project that was 358 domains from 59 checked keywords. Semrush then sizes each rival's traffic and backlinks.

Which Semrush tools does Claude use for competitor analysis?+

The Semrush connector listing shows 14 tools, including competitors_research, organic_research, domain_overview and backlinks_research, with read permissions. Claude uses them to pull each rival's organic keywords, domain metrics and backlinks. This page lists those tools from the connector listing and has not run them on a live Semrush account.

How many Semrush API units does a competitor analysis use?+

Semrush does not give one figure. Its docs say each request uses units that depend on the report type and the amount of data, and its guide says every MCP call uses units. Listed plans include 50,000. Ask Claude for specific reports, cap the rows and run one competitor at a time.

Does Linkeddit show competitor backlinks?+

No. Backlinks are Semrush's data, through backlinks_research. Linkeddit shows which competitors rank in the Google top 10 on your keywords, which topics are gaps, how often AI Overviews and each AI engine cite a domain and, with content_map, how a competitor's public sitemap is organized. Claude joins the two sets.

Can Semrush MCP find my competitors without a list?+

Yes, according to Semrush's guide. Give Claude the keywords you want to rank for and the Semrush MCP can pull the domains already ranking for them, which are your search competitors. Linkeddit does the same from your tracked keywords and adds which of those domains the AI engines cite.
