Semrush + Linkeddit

Semrush AI Overview rank tracking, compared with a second measurement

Semrush tracks Google AI Overviews in Position Tracking: add keywords to a campaign and filter for AI Overview to see where your domain is cited. For a second reading, Linkeddit records weekly Google ranks and whether the AI Overview appeared and cited you, kept separate from the organic rank. Ask Claude to put both in one table per keyword and rerun it weekly.

The prompt

Paste into Claude

Use the Linkeddit connector and the Semrush connector to build an AI Overview tracking report for my domain. 1) With Linkeddit search_visibility_get, view=ranks, list my tracked keywords with the latest rank, the change, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether it cited my domain and the top domain. 2) With Semrush position_tracking, read my campaign for the same keywords: position, and whether my domain is recorded in the AI Overview. 3) Build one table per keyword with the Linkeddit reading and the Semrush reading in separate columns, and flag every keyword where the two disagree about the AI Overview. 4) Add view=history for the three keywords that moved most. Keep the two sources labeled and do not estimate any value a connector did not return.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Connect both connectors to Claude

Add the Semrush connector and the Linkeddit connector (https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp) in Claude or Claude Code. Both reads in this workflow leave your accounts unchanged.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the same keywords are tracked

Semrush Position Tracking needs a campaign with your website, a location, a device type and your keywords. Track the same keywords in Linkeddit so the two tables line up row by row.

  3. Step 3

    Pull the Linkeddit ranks

Ask Claude for search_visibility_get with view=ranks. Each keyword returns the latest rank, the change since the previous check, ai_overview_shown and ai_overview_cites_us. A rank of null means not in the top 10, which is a result and not a missing check.

  4. Step 4

    Pull the Semrush reading

Have Claude read the same keywords from Semrush Position Tracking. In Semrush's interface the AI Overview filter lives under SERP features in the Overview tab.

  5. Step 5

    Join them and rerun weekly

Ask for one table with both readings and the disagreements flagged, then repeat it each week and use view=history for the keywords that moved.

What Linkeddit returned

Run live on 2026-10-29 with search_visibility_get. Read-only run on Linkeddit's own test project (plausible.io, a privacy analytics site). It shows the rank and AI Overview fields Claude would line up against Semrush Position Tracking. Four of 25 tracked keywords are shown, trimmed.

How does Semrush track AI Overviews?

Semrush's knowledge base says Position Tracking shows which SERP features you appear in, including AI Overviews. You create a campaign inside a project with your website URL, a location, a device type and your keywords, then open the Overview tab and use the SERP features filter to show keywords that triggered an AI Overview where your domain appears as a source. Its AI Overview guide says Position Tracking updates daily.

Semrush also describes Organic Research, Domain Overview, Keyword Overview, the Keyword Magic Tool and Semrush Sensor as places to see AI Overview data. The Semrush MCP connector lists a position_tracking tool, but this page does not assume which of those AI Overview filters the connector returns, so ask Claude to report exactly what it received.

Why can two AI Overview readings disagree?

Semrush's knowledge base notes that when your domain is cited as a source in an AI Overview, Position Tracking records it as a number one ranking, whatever your page ranks in the organic results below. It adds a SERP features toggle to view rankings with or without AI Overviews counted. That is a defined convention, and it means the Semrush position can differ from the organic rank another tool reports.

Linkeddit keeps the two apart. In the test run, cookieless analytics has a rank of null (not in the Google top 10) while the AI Overview shown for it cited plausible.io. A tool that counts the citation as a top position and a tool that reports organic rank will tell different stories about the same keyword, and the table should show both columns.

What does weekly Linkeddit tracking add?

search_visibility_get returns, for each tracked keyword, the latest rank, the change since the previous check, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether it cited the project and the top domain. On the test project 25 keywords are tracked, and three of the four shown had an AI Overview that cited the project.

view=history gives the rank series over up to 52 weeks. view=aio_impact splits keywords into those with and without an AI Overview and compares Search Console clicks before and after, but it needs Search Console connected. Semrush's own guide notes that Search Console folds AI Overview clicks and impressions into overall performance, which is why a separate record matters.

How should you read AI Overview tracking from any tool?

Treat each reading as a sample. Linkeddit states in its results that a rank of null is a result, not a failure, and that its checks cover the keywords you track, not the whole web. Semrush's guide says an AI Overview appearing on a keyword you rank for does not mean your site is featured in it, which is why it separates the two filters.

Semrush also sells an AI Visibility Toolkit for brand mentions in AI platforms, and Linkeddit measures ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Use this report for Google rank and the Overview, and use the competitor and citation workflows for the engine answers.

Some SEOs build the check by hand. "Right now I’m checking a fixed list of buying questions every month, noting whether an AI Overview appears and who it cites, and pairing that with branded search and GA4 referrals from AI platforms," described an ecommerce SEO on Reddit. That routine shows why a second, repeatable measurement helps when you compare it against a tool's reading.

How do you tell whether AI Overviews are costing you clicks?

Semrush's AI Overview guide says Google Search Console rolls AI Overview clicks and impressions into overall performance, so there is no easy way to pull them out, and reports that AI Overviews show for over 50% of queries in Semrush Sensor. Neither fact tells you what happened to your own clicks.

Linkeddit's aio_impact view of search_visibility_get compares Search Console clicks before and after for keywords with and without an AI Overview. It defaults to 28 days each side, accepts up to 180, and returns both groups, a verdict with its version and the caveats. It needs Search Console connected, so treat it as a comparison to read, not proof of cause.

Run the report weekly and keep the dated tables. A keyword that gains an AI Overview in one week and loses clicks in the next is worth a closer look, and a saved sequence of readings from both tools shows it far better than a single snapshot. Ask Claude to note the check date beside every number.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track AI Overviews with Semrush?+

Create a Position Tracking campaign with your website, location, device type and keywords, open the Overview tab, and use the SERP features filter to select AI Overviews. Semrush's guide says the tool updates daily. Ask Claude to read the same keywords through the Semrush connector, then compare them with Linkeddit's weekly check.

What is the best tool to check if my site is cited in Google AI Overviews?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month, for a separate record of it: each tracked keyword shows the weekly Google rank, whether an AI Overview appeared and whether it cited your domain, kept apart from the organic rank. Use Semrush Position Tracking alongside it, and let Claude flag the keywords where the two readings disagree.

Does Semrush count an AI Overview citation as a ranking?+

Yes. Semrush's knowledge base says that when your domain is cited as a source in an AI Overview, Position Tracking records it as a number one ranking, regardless of where the page ranks organically. A toggle lets you view positions with or without AI Overviews, so ask Claude which setting each number used.

Why does my Semrush position differ from Linkeddit's rank?+

Two reasons. Semrush can record an AI Overview citation as a number one position, while Linkeddit reports the best organic position in the Google top 10 and a separate cited flag. Checks also run on different days and from different setups, so compare trends over weeks and treat a single disagreement as a prompt to look.

Can Claude pull Semrush Position Tracking data?+

The Semrush connector lists a position_tracking tool, and Semrush says the MCP server reads from its SEO, Trends and read-only Projects APIs. This page has not run it, so ask Claude to report which fields came back, such as position and AI Overview status, and to say so when a field is missing.

Do these steps work in ChatGPT?+

They are written and tested for Claude and Claude Code. Semrush documents a ChatGPT setup for its own app, but the combined Linkeddit and Semrush report on this page has not been written for ChatGPT, and clients handle tools differently. Do not assume the same prompt carries over unchanged.

What is the best way to track Google AI Overviews week to week?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month, records weekly Google ranks for your tracked keywords with the AI Overview shown above them and whether it cited your domain, and keeps up to 52 weeks of history. Pair it with Semrush Position Tracking, which updates daily, and ask Claude to flag where the two readings disagree.

How often does Semrush update AI Overview tracking?+

Semrush's AI Overview guide says Position Tracking updates daily, so you can see whether visibility is improving or declining day to day. Linkeddit's rank checks are weekly. Daily data shows short swings sooner, and a weekly record is easier to compare over months, so ask Claude to line the two up by week.

Does Search Console show AI Overview clicks?+

Not separately. Semrush's guide says Search Console includes AI Overview clicks and impressions in overall performance data, with no easy way to pull them out. Linkeddit's aio_impact view compares clicks before and after for keywords with and without an AI Overview, using your Search Console data, and returns caveats with its verdict.

What does a null rank mean in Linkeddit?+

A null rank means the project's domain was not in the Google top 10 on the latest check. Linkeddit's definitions call it a result and not a missing check. In the test run, cookieless analytics had a null rank while its AI Overview still cited the domain, so rank and citation are separate fields.

Can Linkeddit check keywords I do not track?+

Not through this read. search_visibility_get is read only, runs no checks and returns the keywords already tracked, with their latest rank and AI Overview status. If a keyword is missing, add it to your tracked list in Linkeddit or Semrush first, then ask Claude to rerun the report.
