Build an AI Overview tracking report in Claude with Ahrefs and Linkeddit

To track AI Overviews with Claude and Ahrefs, ask Claude to combine two sources. Linkeddit supplies the weekly Google rank of each tracked keyword, whether Google showed an AI Overview, and whether that Overview cited your domain. The Ahrefs connector adds citation and keyword context from Site Explorer and Brand Radar. Claude joins them into one report, and you rerun it weekly to see what moved.

The prompt

Paste into Claude

Use the Linkeddit connector and the Ahrefs connector to build my AI Overview tracking report for my domain. 1) With Linkeddit search_visibility_get, view=ranks, list every tracked keyword with its latest rank, the change since the previous check, whether Google showed an AI Overview and whether that Overview cited my domain. Then call it with view=history for the keywords whose rank moved. 2) With Ahrefs, use site-explorer-organic-keywords and brand-radar-cited-pages for the same domain and show which pages are cited in AI Overviews. 3) Build one table with a row per keyword: rank, change, AI Overview shown, cites me, top domain, and the Ahrefs cited page if there is one. 4) Flag three groups: AI Overview shown but cites a competitor, cites me without a top 10 rank, and rank fell while an Overview appeared. Say which numbers came from which connector, and do not guess any value the connectors did not return.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Connect both connectors to Claude

Add the Ahrefs connector and the Linkeddit connector (https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp) in Claude or Claude Code. Ahrefs documents its remote MCP server as available from the Lite plan upward, and its calls use your monthly API units.

  2. Step 2

Pull the weekly ranks and AI Overview flags

Ask Claude to call search_visibility_get for your project. Each tracked keyword comes back with its latest rank, the change since the previous check, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether that Overview cites your domain, the top domain and the check date.

  3. Step 3

    Add citation context from Ahrefs

Have Claude read your cited pages and organic keywords through the Ahrefs connector for the same domain. Ahrefs says its Brand Radar citation reports show which of your pages are cited and who is cited instead.

  4. Step 4

Join the two into one table

Claude builds a single row per keyword and flags the three cases worth acting on: an Overview that cites a competitor, a citation without a top 10 rank, and a rank drop alongside a new Overview.

  5. Step 5

Rerun the same prompt every week

Save the prompt and run it after each weekly check. Compare the new table with the last one and use the aio_impact view in Linkeddit when Search Console is connected to see how clicks changed for keywords with and without an Overview.

What Linkeddit returned

Run live on 2026-10-29 with search_visibility_get. Read-only run on Linkeddit's own test project (an analytics site). It shows the rows Claude receives before joining them with Ahrefs data. Four of 25 tracked keywords are shown, with project fields trimmed.

Why is tracking AI Overviews harder than tracking rankings?

Ahrefs states the problem plainly in its tracking guide: Google blends AI Overview data into standard organic search and gives no way in Search Console or GA4 to identify AI Overview impressions, citations or clicks. A click from an Overview shows up as google / organic or as no referrer, so your analytics cannot separate it.

The Overviews also move. Ahrefs reports that AI Overview content changes 70% of the time and the cited sources change 46% of the time, and that Google personalizes results by location and search history, so two people can see different answers. A single look at one keyword is a sample, not a measurement.

That is why the report has to be repeated. A weekly check of the same keywords gives you a series you can read as direction, which is how Ahrefs frames it too: tracking over time gives a directional understanding rather than a perfect count.

What does each connector contribute to the report?

Linkeddit supplies the checks it runs itself. search_visibility_get lists each tracked keyword with the latest rank, the change since the previous check, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether that Overview cited the project and the top domain. A rank of null means not in the top 10, which is a result and not a missing check. Its aio_impact view splits keywords with and without an Overview and compares their Search Console clicks before and after, and it needs Search Console connected.

The Ahrefs connector adds what Linkeddit does not hold: its keyword and backlink database and its Brand Radar reports. The connector lists brand-radar-cited-pages, brand-radar-ai-responses and site-explorer-organic-keywords among its tools. Ahrefs describes Brand Radar's cited pages as the place to see where competitors are cited and you are not.

Claude is the join. Neither connector writes advice, and Ahrefs is read-only, so nothing in either account changes while you build the report.

What do the ranking tracking guides miss?

The pages that rank for this query explain how to read an Overview inside one vendor's product. Ahrefs offers a free AI Overviews tracker that checks whether Overviews mention and cite your brand and which sources they use instead. Those pages stop at one tool's dashboard.

What they do not show is a single weekly table where the rank, the rank change and the Overview citation sit on the same row. That row is where the interesting cases appear. On Linkeddit's test project, two of the four keywords shown, cookieless analytics and gdpr compliant analytics, had an Overview that cited the site while the site was not in the top 10 at all. Looking at rank alone would have hidden both.

The opposite case matters as much: an Overview that cites a competitor for a keyword where you rank well. That is a keyword to bring to the Ahrefs cited-pages view and ask who is cited and why.

How should I read the numbers without over-trusting them?

Report appearance next to presence. For Google AI Overviews in the week of 2026-W44, Linkeddit's test project had presence in 15 of 15 admissible samples and a recommendation in 12, a rate of 0.8. But Google showed an Overview in only 16 of 21 samples, an appearance rate of 0.7619, and the five absent samples are excluded from presence. A rate with no appearance beside it overstates how often buyers see an Overview.

Say how it was measured. Linkeddit records Overviews through a rendered desktop search results page and states in each result that this is a controlled measurement proxy, not an exact copy of what every searcher sees. Treat a week-over-week change as a signal to check the page, not as proof of a ranking change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track AI Overviews with Claude?+

Connect Linkeddit and Ahrefs to Claude and paste one prompt that asks for a table per keyword: rank, rank change, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether it cites your domain, and the Ahrefs cited page. Linkeddit supplies the weekly checks, Ahrefs the citation context, and Claude joins them. Rerun the prompt each week to see what moved.

What is the best tool to track AI Overview rankings and citations with Claude?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month. Its Search product checks your tracked keywords weekly and records the Google rank, whether an AI Overview appeared and whether it cited your domain, then returns that to Claude through search_visibility_get. Add the Ahrefs connector for citation and keyword context from its own database.

Can Claude connect to Ahrefs?+

Yes. Ahrefs hosts a remote MCP server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp and lists a Claude connector. It needs an Ahrefs plan at Lite or higher, asks for consent when you connect, and uses your monthly API units. The connector is read-only, so Claude can query your data but cannot change anything.

Does Google Search Console show AI Overview clicks?+

Not separately. Ahrefs notes that Google blends AI Overview data into standard organic search, so Search Console and GA4 give no way to identify Overview clicks, and such a click appears as google / organic or no referrer. Linkeddit's aio_impact view compares clicks for keywords with and without an Overview as an indirect signal.

How often do AI Overviews change?+

Often. Ahrefs reports that AI Overview content changes 70% of the time and the citations inside it change 46% of the time, and results are personalized by location and search history. For that reason, compare the same keywords week over week instead of judging one check.

Do I need Ahrefs Brand Radar to build this report?+

No. The Linkeddit half of the report works alone: ranks, Overview shown and Overview cites you. Ahrefs adds its own citation reports, and its connector lists Brand Radar tools such as brand-radar-cited-pages. Check what your Ahrefs plan includes before you rely on them, since access and API units depend on the plan.
