Ahrefs + Linkeddit

Find the sources AI engines cite, then rank them for outreach

To find the sources AI engines cite, start from your buying questions, not your own pages. Linkeddit records which domains ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI cite for them and lists the questions where a competitor wins. The Ahrefs connector adds authority and backlink data for each publisher. Claude merges the two into a ranked outreach list, and you write and send every pitch yourself.

The prompt

Paste into Claude

Use the Linkeddit connector and the Ahrefs connector to build an AI citation outreach list for my brand. 1) With Linkeddit answer_gaps_get, list my open gaps, then read the cited sources for the top five. With answer_results_get, view=metrics, list the domains each engine cites most (citation share) and mark which are mine and which are competitors. 2) Take the cited pages that are neither mine nor a competitor's. With Ahrefs brand-radar-cited-pages and brand-radar-cited-domains, check how often those pages are cited, and with site-explorer-domain-rating and site-explorer-referring-domains, rate each publisher. 3) Rank the pages by how often the engines cite them, how relevant the question is, whether a competitor is already on the page and how strong the publisher is. 4) For the top ten, propose a low-effort change to ask the publisher for. Then stop and wait for me to approve the pages I want read in full before you call answer_sources_fetch on them. Draft nothing to send until I approve a page.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Connect both connectors to Claude

Add the Ahrefs connector and the Linkeddit connector (https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp) in Claude or Claude Code. Ahrefs is read-only, so the workflow cannot change your Ahrefs account.

  2. Step 2

Pull the gaps and the citation shares

Ask Claude to call answer_gaps_get for the buying questions where an engine recommended a competitor, then answer_results_get with view=metrics for the citation share per engine. Citation share lists every domain the engines cited, flagged as yours, a competitor's or neither.

  3. Step 3

    Rate each publisher in Ahrefs

For the third-party domains and pages, have Claude read citation counts from Brand Radar and authority from Site Explorer through the Ahrefs connector. This tells you which placements are worth a pitch.

  4. Step 4

    Read the pages you picked

Approve a short list, then have Claude call answer_sources_fetch on each cited URL. It stores the page in your Answer Radar evidence store so Claude can check what it says about you. This step stores data, so it is not run until you approve it.

  5. Step 5

Draft the pitches, then send them yourself

Ask Claude for a short pitch per page that suggests one low-effort change, such as correcting a fact or adding your product to a list. Review every pitch. Neither connector sends email.

What Linkeddit returned

Run live on 2026-10-29 with answer_results_get. Read-only run on Linkeddit's own test project (an analytics site). It shows the citation share rows Claude starts from. Top five domains per engine are shown, trimmed. Perplexity returned errors for every sample that week, so it is reported as unmeasured, not zero.

Why do the sources AI engines cite matter for outreach?

DeepSmith frames the shift this way: getting named in a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer is usually not about your own site alone, but about the third-party domains the engines trust and pull from. Once you can see that list, outreach becomes a targeted plan aimed at review sites, listicles and roundups the engines already lean on.

Semrush gives a reason to care beyond links. Its study with Kevin Indig found that 62% of AI citations do not result in a brand mention. A page can be cited without naming the product you want named, so getting your brand onto a page that engines already cite is worth more than another page of your own.

Semrush also points out that cited pages can be wrong. In its example, Claude repeated an outdated claim about a product from a review, even though the product documentation said otherwise. Part of outreach is correcting what a cited page says about you.

What does a real citation list look like?

It is long and flat. On Linkeddit's test project, the five most-cited domains in ChatGPT's answers hold about 21% of citations: matomo.org 10 of 183, itechguides.com 9, the project's own plausible.io 8 and analytics-alternatives.com 5. The remaining 79% sits in a long tail of other domains, so a list of just the top few sites misses most of the opportunity.

The engines differ. In Google AI Overviews the leading cited domains were analytics-alternatives.com and youtube.com at 6 of 107 each, with reddit.com at 4. A page that one engine cites often may not appear for another, so keep the engines separate when you rank pages.

Two of the top ChatGPT domains, itechguides.com and analytics-alternatives.com, are neither the customer nor a tracked competitor. Those are the outreach candidates. The gap record gives the question to attach them to: an open gap where the brand was neither mentioned nor cited in 3 successful samples.

How should I prioritize which cited pages to pitch?

Semrush lists six factors: citation impact, prompt relevance, competitor presence, the size of the brand gap on the page, publisher authority and outreach feasibility. It adds that competitor pages and some government sites are less receptive. Do not exclude competitor domains blindly, though, since a competitor's comparison page can still be worth pitching.

Split the factors across the connectors. Linkeddit gives you citation impact per engine and the question each page answers. Ahrefs gives you publisher authority and backlink context through tools such as site-explorer-domain-rating and site-explorer-referring-domains, plus brand-radar-cited-pages for how often a page is cited.

Semrush recommends a human reviews each opportunity, because a publisher who finds an error in a pitch may ignore it, and suggests asking for a low-effort change instead of a long list of additions. Claude drafts, you decide, and nothing is sent automatically.

What do the existing guides miss?

The ranking pages for this query are written around one vendor's product. Semrush's workflow starts from a CSV export of its own prompt tracking, and DeepSmith's page compares five tools, including Ahrefs Brand Radar, whose AI Citations report it describes as the core screen for this job. None shows how to combine the measured citation data you already have with a separate authority source in one conversation.

This workflow also keeps the question attached to the page. Because Linkeddit's gap record names the buying question where the engine recommended someone else, Claude can write a pitch that says why the page matters for that question, not only that it is popular. The limit is that citation data is a controlled measurement proxy, not a copy of what every user sees, so check a page before you pitch it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the sources AI engines cite?+

Track the buying questions your customers ask, then read which domains each AI engine cites in its answers. Linkeddit records this for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews and lists each domain's citation share. Claude can then rank those domains for outreach using authority data from Ahrefs.

What is the best tool to find the sources AI engines cite for outreach?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month. It records the domains and pages each answer engine cites for your buying questions, flags which are yours or a competitor's, and ties them to the gaps where a competitor was recommended instead of you. Connect it to Claude with the Ahrefs connector to rate each publisher.

What is AI citation outreach?+

Semrush defines AI citation outreach as finding the pages AI answers cite and getting your brand included on those pages. It is not only link building: a cited page signals authority for that question, and a brand mentioned on it benefits. Part of the work is correcting outdated information about your product.

Does Linkeddit send the outreach emails?+

No. Linkeddit supplies data and Claude drafts, but neither connector sends email, and Ahrefs is read-only. You review each pitch and send it yourself. That is deliberate, since a publisher who spots an error in a pitch may ignore it, so every opportunity needs a human check.

Why does a cited page not always mention my brand?+

Semrush's study with Kevin Indig found 62% of AI citations do not result in a brand mention, which it calls ghost citations. An engine can cite a page for a fact without naming a vendor. This is why the goal of outreach is to get your brand onto pages that are already cited.

What does answer_sources_fetch do?+

It fetches a cited page and stores it in your Answer Radar evidence store so Claude can read it and cite it. It needs the Compete plan and returns a blocked status for private or oversized addresses, which means the fetch was refused, not that the page is empty. Because it stores data, this workflow waits for your approval first.
