People Also Ask vs AI Overviews: What 648 Google Results Pages Show (2026)
People Also Ask is still on about half the Google results pages we read, and AI Overviews are on nearly a third. Here is how often they appear together, which sites AI Overviews cite, and what that means for getting your answers picked up.

Verification. Every percentage on this page was computed by Linkeddit from Google US results pages read on 29 October 2026; the method is in the last section. Statements about how People Also Ask works are attributed to Ahrefs and Nightwatch, whose pages we read the same day. We did not repeat any third-party prevalence figure as our own.
Key takeaways
- 51% of 648 results pages had a People Also Ask box, 31% had an AI Overview, 18% had both, 35% had neither.
- 65% of pages with a People Also Ask box (217 of 332) had no AI Overview, so the box is not being replaced everywhere.
- Question-style searches were far more likely to show the box (82%) and less likely to show an AI Overview (17%) than other searches in the sample.
- Where an AI Overview appeared, 86% of the time it cited at least one of the top three organic domains, and YouTube was cited in 80%.
- To get into People Also Ask: answer the question first, in a heading, on a page that already ranks for that question.
1Does People Also Ask still matter now that Google shows AI Overviews?
Yes. Of the 648 Google US results pages we read, 332 (51%) still showed a People Also Ask box, against 202 (31%) with an AI Overview. For reference, Ahrefs reported on its People Also Ask guide that 43% of the search queries in its Keywords Explorer show a box. Our figure is higher because we chose keywords about SEO, AI search and software, which are question-heavy. It describes this sample, not all of Google.
When the box appeared, it showed exactly four questions on 316 of the 332 pages (95%). That matches what Ahrefs describes: most boxes start with three or four questions and load more as you expand them. What has changed is not whether the box exists but what else sits beside it. A People Also Ask answer is one of several ways Google can answer a question above the organic results.
2How often do People Also Ask and AI Overviews appear together?
On 18% of pages (115 of 648). Splitting the sample four ways shows the box and the overview are not substitutes for each other:
| What the page showed | Pages | Share of 648 |
|---|---|---|
| People Also Ask box only | 217 | 33% |
| AI Overview only | 87 | 13% |
| Both | 115 | 18% |
| Neither | 229 | 35% |
AI Overviews were somewhat more common on pages that also had a box: 35% (115 of 332) against 28% (87 of 316) on pages without one. That is a seven point gap in one sample, so read it as a hint that the two tend to cluster on informational searches, not as a rule. The bigger split is by query shape:
| Search starts with what, how, why, is, can, does and similar | Pages | Had a People Also Ask box | Had an AI Overview |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yes, question-form | 71 | 58 (82%) | 12 (17%) |
| No, everything else | 577 | 274 (47%) | 190 (33%) |
Only 71 of our 648 searches were question-form, so treat that row as directional. It fits the shape of the two features: the box is built from questions, so it fires most on questions, while overviews appeared more on short brand, comparison and tool searches in this sample.
3Are People Also Ask answers AI?
Not the way an AI Overview is, as far as the sources we read describe it. Ahrefs says each People Also Ask answer comes from a web page and that Google links the source under the answer. Nightwatch describes a one to three sentence answer, usually from a blog or trusted article, with a link, followed by more related questions. An AI Overview is a separate block above the results: in our data it is a generated summary plus a list of cited URLs.
We did not test how Google produces either answer, so we are reporting what those two publishers observed, not what Google has said. The practical difference is the one you can measure: a People Also Ask answer names one source page per question, while an AI Overview in our 113 fully captured examples cited about 6.5 distinct sites on average.
4Which sites do AI Overviews cite, and are they the top organic results?
For the 113 searches in our 400-search keyword set that had an AI Overview, we recorded the cited URLs and compared them with the ten organic results on the same page. Mostly they overlap, but not completely:
So ranking well is close to a prerequisite for being cited, yet half the time the first result is left out. The domains cited most often in those 113 overviews were:
| Domain | AI Overviews citing it | Share of 113 |
|---|---|---|
| youtube.com (incl. m.youtube.com) | 91 | 81% |
| reddit.com | 30 | 27% |
| zapier.com | 23 | 20% |
| semrush.com | 19 | 17% |
| seranking.com | 13 | 12% |
| moz.com | 13 | 12% |
| g2.com | 13 | 12% |
Two things stand out. YouTube appeared in four of every five overviews we captured, so a video is a real way into these answers. And a discussion site, Reddit, was cited in more than a quarter. The set skews toward software and SEO searches, where review and comparison sites are common, so do not read the exact domains as a ranking for every niche. The pattern to take away is that overviews cite many source types at once.
5What a People Also Ask tree and AI Overview look like live
To show the two features side by side, we ran three live checks on 29 October 2026 with Linkeddit's People Also Ask data source, in the United States, in three different niches.
"how to start a vegetable garden"
Two levels deep, following four questions per level, it returned 18 questions from 5 results pages: four at the first level, such as "What is the best month to start a vegetable garden?" and "What is the most common mistake of first time gardeners?", and 14 beneath them. Three of the 18 were near repeats of one question about the easiest vegetable for beginners, which shows how a tree loops back on itself. The page also had an AI Overview citing eight URLs: three YouTube videos and five sites, including UMD Extension, The Old Farmer's Almanac and Creative Vegetable Gardener. The first, second and fourth organic results were cited; the third, a Reddit thread, was not.
"is it safe to take ibuprofen every day"
One level deep, it returned four questions, such as "How many days in a row can you take 200 mg ibuprofen?", and an AI Overview citing ten URLs: Cleveland Clinic, UPMC, the NHS, Mayo Clinic, GoodRx, two other health sites, two YouTube Shorts and a Facebook video. All of the top three organic domains were among them. We are not reproducing the answer text, which is health advice.
"what is query fan out"
One level deep, the four questions were "What does fan-out mean in SQL?", "Is SEO dead now with AI?", "How to see fan-out queries?" and "What does fan-out mean in programming?". Two of the four are about other meanings of the term, a reminder that the box reflects what people ask about a phrase, not only the meaning you intend. The AI Overview cited four URLs, from Semrush, Ahrefs, Search Engine Land and Surfer. Linkeddit was not among them.

6How do you get into People Also Ask in 2026?
The basics have not changed, and the two long guides agree on them. Use the question as a heading, answer it in the first two or three sentences, then expand; format the answer as a short paragraph, list or table to match what Google currently shows; and consider FAQ markup, which Nightwatch says helps but does not guarantee a place. Ahrefs adds the rule most people miss: it reports that answers mostly come from pages already in the top ten for the question itself, so your page needs to rank for the question before it can be the source.
Ahrefs also reports that the same question usually draws its answer from the same page on every search where it appears. If that holds, one good answer can surface on many searches, so choose the questions that recur. This is where first-party data changes the order of work. Our data adds two steps neither guide covers: look for the question-form searches where the box is far more common than an AI Overview (82% against 17% in our sample), and before you write, check whether the overview for that question already cites sources you cannot beat. Where it cites weak sources, a clearer answer can take their place.
Ahrefs also points out that you cannot see how often people click People Also Ask answers in Search Console, so treat any promise of a click rate as an estimate. To follow your own questions every week, Linkeddit Search records the AI Overview on every check, and Answer Radar shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI answers name you or a competitor. Both are on the one Compete plan at $60 a month.
7People Also Ask vs query fan-out
People Also Ask is visible: it is a box on the results page. Query fan-out is hidden: it is the set of background searches an AI search system runs to build one answer. Both turn one search into many related questions, which is why a page that covers a topic fully tends to serve both. Use the box to see what Google suggests asking, and use our query fan-out guide and the free fan-out generator to see the searches an AI engine runs. For how the question tools compare, see AlsoAsked alternatives.
8How we measured this
We combined two sets of Google US results pages, all read on 29 October 2026 in English, and de-duplicated by search phrase to get 648 unique pages: 400 from a keyword set and 248 more from a People Also Ask map that followed questions two levels deep. A page counted as having a People Also Ask box when at least one question was captured, and as having an AI Overview when the captured overview had text or cited sources.
- Box and overview shares, overlap and the four-way split use all 648 pages.
- The question-form split classifies a search as a question when its first word is what, how, why, is, can, does, do, are, which, who, when, where, should or will (71 pages).
- Cited domains and the overlap with organic results use the 400-page keyword set only, because cited URLs were recorded for those pages: 113 had an AI Overview. Domains are compared without "www.", and m.youtube.com is counted as youtube.com.
- The live checks in section 5 are single runs on one day.
Limits: one day, one country, one language, and a niche of SEO, AI search and software keywords that Linkeddit chose. Google varies results by location and over time. These numbers describe the sample and are not Google-wide rates.
9Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Does People Also Ask still matter now that Google shows AI Overviews?+
Yes, as a research and visibility surface. In the 648 Google US results pages we read on 29 October 2026, 51% still had a People Also Ask box and 31% had an AI Overview, and 18% had both. Most pages with a box (65%) had no AI Overview. It matters less as a click source, so check which questions an AI Overview already answers.
Are People Also Ask answers AI?+
Not in the way an AI Overview is. Ahrefs describes each People Also Ask answer as coming from a web page, with a clickable link to the source below it. An AI Overview is a separate generated summary with its own cited links. We did not test how Google builds each answer, so treat the source-page description as Ahrefs' observation.
How do you get into People Also Ask in 2026?+
Put the question in a heading and answer it in the first two or three sentences, then add detail. Ahrefs found that answers mostly come from pages that already rank in the top ten for the question itself, so rank for that question first. Nightwatch adds short paragraphs, lists and FAQ markup. None of it guarantees a place.
Why is the People Also Ask section not working?+
Often it is simply absent. In our sample of 648 results pages, 316 (49%) had no People Also Ask box at all, and question-style searches were more likely to show one than short brand or tool searches. We did not test why a box fails to load on a given search, so try a different phrasing of the query.
How do you use People Also Ask for SEO?+
Treat the box as a list of follow-up questions real searchers ask. Expanding a question loads more, so one search gives you a tree. Use it to pick the sections of a page, write each answer first, and check whether an AI Overview already answers the same question and which sites it cites before you invest.
Where do the answers in People Also Ask come from?+
Per Ahrefs, each answer is taken from a web page, and Google shows a link to that source under the answer. Ahrefs also reports that the same question gets its answer from the same page across different searches, and that the source is usually a top ten result for the question itself. That is Ahrefs' observation, not a Google statement.
What does PAA mean in SEO?+
PAA stands for People Also Ask, the Google results feature that shows a box of related questions you can expand to read a short answer and a source link. SEOs track it as a SERP feature, mine it for content ideas, and try to become the answer source for the questions it shows.
People Also Ask vs query fan-out: what is the difference?+
People Also Ask is a box you can see on the results page, showing questions Google suggests. Query fan-out is the set of background searches an AI search system runs to build one answer, which you normally do not see. They overlap in topic, not in mechanism, so both are worth covering. Our guide to query fan-out explains the second.
What is the best tool to see which People Also Ask questions get an AI Overview?+
Linkeddit's free People Also Ask tool (we make it), because for each question in the live tree it shows whether Google displays an AI Overview and which sites it cites, with CSV export. AlsoAsked draws the tree but has no AI Overview data, and AnswerThePublic adds search volume instead. Linkeddit's tool does not show search volume.
