AnswerThePublic Alternatives: Free Options and Who Needs Search Volume (2026)
AnswerThePublic is the best-known question tool and the one most people hit a limit on. Here is what the free tier and each paid plan really give you, who needs the search volume that justifies paying, and what to use if you do not.

Verification. Prices and features were read on the vendors' own pages on 29 October 2026: AnswerThePublic, AlsoAsked, KeywordsPeopleUse and AnswerSocrates. We also read two existing roundups, from AnswerSocrates and Search Endurance, to see what they cover. The AI assistant results come from Linkeddit asking ChatGPT and Google AI Mode the same questions on the same day.
Key takeaways
- AnswerThePublic costs $10, $49.50 or $99.50 a month billed yearly, for 100, 200 or 300 searches a month. Its pricing page shows only yearly billing.
- Its free tier is a daily limit with no number on the pricing page. The paid plans add volume, cost per click, exports and alerts.
- The reason to pay is search volume. The reason to leave is that you only wanted questions, which free tools give you.
- Free alternatives: Linkeddit's People Also Ask tool (no volume), AnswerSocrates (3 free searches a day) and QuestionDB.
- In 648 Google results pages we read, 31% carried an AI Overview. Volume does not tell you which questions Google already answers.
1Quick verdict
Decide by what you will do with the output. If the next step is choosing which topics to target, volume matters and AnswerThePublic earns its fee. If the next step is writing the sections and FAQ of one page, you need questions, not volume, and a free tool is enough.
| Tool | Free use | Paid from | Search volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnswerThePublic | A free daily limit | $10/mo billed yearly, 100 searches | Yes, on paid plans |
| Linkeddit People Also Ask tool (we make it) | Question finder with no account; 5 live trees a month with a free account | Free | No |
| AnswerSocrates | 3 searches a day, no card | Paid plans for more searches | In CSV export, per its own blog |
| AlsoAsked | 3 searches without an account | $15/mo, 100 searches | No |
| KeywordsPeopleUse | 7-day trial, card required | $15/mo, 150 credits | Not checked |
2What is AnswerThePublic's free limit?
AnswerThePublic lets you search free up to a daily limit, and its pricing page does not say how many searches that is. The page promotes "more daily searches" on paid plans, with the note that a fair usage limit applies. When we asked ChatGPT, it said the free plan includes up to 3 searches a day; the page itself gives no figure, so treat that as unconfirmed.
The practical effect is the one AnswerSocrates's roundup describes from its own experience: a daily cap is fine for an occasional lookup and a wall for anyone researching several topics a day. Because the number is not published, you only find your limit by hitting it.
What the free tier leaves out is listed on the pricing page as paid features: keyword lists to organise research, export to a spreadsheet for Pro users, hiding unwanted branches, high-resolution images, search listening alerts with weekly email digests, and comparing data over time. Volume and cost per click also sit behind the paid plans.
3How much does AnswerThePublic cost?
| Plan | Per month, billed yearly | Per year | Searches a month | Users |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | A daily limit | Not stated |
| Starter | $10 | $120 | 100 | 1 |
| Growth | $49.50 | $594 | 200 | 3 |
| Business | $99.50 | $1,194 | 300 | 10 |
Yearly totals are the monthly figure times twelve. The pricing page, read on 29 October 2026, showed yearly billing and a 6 months free offer on the annual plan, with no monthly-billing price visible, so we cannot tell you what a month-to-month plan costs. Starter includes search volume and cost per click data and 1,000 AI prompt suggestions. AnswerThePublic is part of NP Digital and also sells Content Studio, an AI article writer. Need more users or domains and the page points you to a custom plan.
4Who actually needs search volume?
You need volume when you are choosing between topics and can only write some of them. A list of 300 questions is not a plan until you can rank them, and volume and cost per click are the only columns AnswerThePublic adds that a People Also Ask tool does not.
| Your job | Do you need volume? | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing which topics or keywords to target | Yes | AnswerThePublic, or a keyword suite you already pay for |
| Writing the sections and FAQ of one page | No | A People Also Ask tool, free |
| Briefing a client on audience questions | Sometimes, for the ranking | AnswerThePublic, for the visual output and exports |
| Finding questions your competitors have not answered | No, volume often hides them | Free autocomplete and People Also Ask tools |
| Checking whether Google already answers a question itself | No, volume cannot show it | A tool that reports AI Overviews |
A fair test: if you would use the volume column to cut the list in half, pay for it. If you would write every question that makes sense anyway, you are paying for a number you will not use. Volume also describes demand, not what a page that answers the question looks like, so it never replaces reading the results page.
5The alternatives, by job
Linkeddit People Also Ask tool: free, with AI Overviews, no volume
We make this one, so weigh that. The People Also Ask tool has two layers. The question finder reads Google autocomplete for twelve question words plus vs, or and alternative, and needs no account. With a free account the same search reads Google's results page live: the People Also Ask box with the seed and four questions, two levels deep, and for each question whether Google shows an AI Overview and which sites it cites. Seven countries, CSV export.
Limits: it shows no search volume and no cost per click. You get five live trees a month; repeats come from cache and do not count.
AnswerSocrates: the most generous free tier
3 free searches a day with no card, and a free account gets up to 500 cluster credits a month. It has an MCP connector with 3 data calls a month on every plan. It is also the vendor behind one of the two roundups that currently rank for this query, so read its comparison as a vendor's.
AlsoAsked: the People Also Ask tree
Basic is $15 a month for 100 searches, Lite $29 for 300 and Pro $59 for 1,000, plus tax, with 20% off yearly and 3 free searches without an account. It shows how questions branch from each other, and no search volume. See our AlsoAsked alternatives guide for the full comparison.
KeywordsPeopleUse: People Also Ask plus forum questions
Lite is $15 a month for 150 credits, Standard $39 for 500, Pro $79 for 1,500 and Unlimited $299. It reads People Also Ask, autocomplete, and Reddit and Quora questions, and has an MCP server. The 7-day trial needs a card.
Search Endurance's list: SE Ranking, QuestionDB and others
The Search Endurance roundup covers ten tools, led by SE Ranking, with QuestionDB and Soovle as free options. It says QuestionDB lets you see up to 50 results per search free, with paid plans from $15 a month, and that it gives no volume or competition data.
6AnswerThePublic vs AlsoAsked
| AnswerThePublic | AlsoAsked | |
|---|---|---|
| Data source | Google autocomplete | Google People Also Ask box |
| Search volume | Yes, on paid plans | No |
| Shows how questions branch | No, grouped by question word | Yes, as a tree |
| Free use | A free daily limit | 3 searches without an account |
| Paid from | $10 a month billed yearly, 100 searches | $15 a month, 100 searches |
| Best for | Choosing topics | Planning the sections of one page |
They are complements. Linkeddit's tool runs both sources from one search box, so you do not have to choose: autocomplete for breadth, the live box for structure.
7What AI assistants recommend
On 29 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Google AI Mode three AnswerThePublic questions. These are the other tools each answer named. One run per engine, and answers vary between runs, so read this as a snapshot.
| Question | ChatGPT named | Google AI Mode named |
|---|---|---|
| What are cheaper alternatives to AnswerThePublic? | AnswerSocrates, Google Keyword Planner, AlsoAsked, QuestionDB, Google Autocomplete | AnswerSocrates, AlsoAsked, Keyword Sheeter, Google Trends, People Also Ask boxes |
| AlsoAsked vs AnswerThePublic: which is better? | AlsoAsked and AnswerThePublic only | AlsoAsked and AnswerThePublic only |
| Is AnswerThePublic worth it in 2026? | AlsoAsked, Ahrefs, Google Autocomplete | Semrush, Ahrefs, Google Keyword Planner, People Also Ask scrapers |
Across 51 answers to questions about People Also Ask and question tools, AlsoAsked was named in 59% and AnswerThePublic in 43%. On the cheaper-alternatives question both engines put AnswerSocrates first. Linkeddit was not named in these three answers. ChatGPT also quoted AnswerThePublic's prices correctly, labelled as monthly equivalents billed yearly.
8What volume data leaves out
Volume tells you how many people search a question. It does not tell you whether Google now answers it above the results. We read 648 Google US results pages for SEO, AI search and software keywords on 29 October 2026:
These shares describe that sample, not all of Google. The practical point holds: before you spend a plan on volume, check whether an AI Overview already answers the question and which sites it cites. A high-volume question that Google answers itself may send few clicks, and Linkeddit's tool reports it for each question.
Find the questions, and see which ones AI already answers
To check this every week for the keywords you track, Linkeddit Search records the AI Overview on every check, and Answer Radar shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI answers name you or a competitor. Both are on the one Compete plan at $60 a month.
9Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does AnswerThePublic cost?+
On 29 October 2026 AnswerThePublic's pricing page listed Starter at $10 a month, Growth at $49.50 and Business at $99.50, all billed yearly, so $120, $594 and $1,194 a year. The page highlights 6 free months on the annual plan. It did not show a monthly-billing price when we read it, so check the page before you buy monthly.
Is AnswerThePublic worth it?+
It is worth it if you need search volume and cost per click next to the questions, for example to choose which topics to write about, and you will use the 100 monthly searches on the Starter plan. It is not worth it if you only need question ideas, because free tools cover that and AnswerThePublic's own free tier is limited to a daily allowance.
Is there a free version of AnswerThePublic?+
Yes. AnswerThePublic has a free daily search limit. Its pricing page refers to a free daily limit with a fair usage limit but does not state the number, and ChatGPT told us 3 searches a day, which we could not confirm on the page. Paid plans lift the limit and add volume data, exports and alerts.
What is AnswerThePublic.com used for?+
AnswerThePublic is used to find what people ask about a topic. It takes a keyword, reads the suggestions search engines show as people type, and groups them into questions, prepositions and comparisons. Content teams use it to plan articles, FAQs and videos. Paid plans add search volume and cost per click for each term.
Is AnswerThePublic legit?+
Yes. It is part of NP Digital, the performance marketing agency, and its pricing page says it has over 1.1M users. Our own check was limited to its public pages on 29 October 2026, where the plans, prices and features matched what we describe here.
Is AnswerThePublic free to use?+
Partly. You can run searches without paying, up to a free daily limit that the pricing page does not put a number on. To save keyword lists, export results to a spreadsheet, get search volume and cost per click, or set alerts for new questions, you need a paid plan, starting at $10 a month billed yearly.
What are some free alternatives to AnswerThePublic?+
AnswerSocrates gives 3 free searches a day with no card. Linkeddit's People Also Ask tool has a no-account question finder and, with a free account, a live People Also Ask tree. Search Endurance reports a free tier for QuestionDB too. None of the free tools we checked matches AnswerThePublic's volume and cost per click data.
What are some websites similar to AnswerThePublic?+
The closest are AnswerSocrates and QuestionDB for autocomplete questions, AlsoAsked and KeywordsPeopleUse for People Also Ask data, and Linkeddit's People Also Ask tool, which does both layers. Semrush and Ahrefs also list questions inside full SEO suites, which only make sense if you use the rest of the suite.
What is the best free alternative to AnswerThePublic?+
Linkeddit's People Also Ask tool, which we make, is the best free alternative if you want questions plus AI search data: its question finder needs no account, and a free account adds the live People Also Ask tree with which questions get a Google AI Overview and the sites it cites. It shows no search volume, so AnswerThePublic is the pick if you need volume.
