The Moz MCP server in Claude: what Moz Data and Moz Local do, and what Linkeddit adds

The Moz MCP server connects Claude to Moz's own data through two endpoints: Moz Data for site metrics, links, keywords and rankings, and Moz Local for business listings and local search performance. Each needs its matching Moz subscription. Moz is strong on links and Domain Authority. Linkeddit adds what Moz does not report: where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews recommend a competitor instead of you, and what competitors changed this week.

Moz connector

  1. In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, search for Moz and connect Moz Data, Moz Local or both, completing the OAuth sign-in. Moz lists both in Claude's connector directory.
  2. In Claude Code, run claude mcp add moz-mcp-v1-data https://api.moz.com/mcp/v1/data --transport http --scope user, then run /mcp to finish the OAuth sign-in. For Moz Local, use moz-mcp-v1-local and https://api.moz.com/mcp/v1/local.
  3. Add the Linkeddit connector at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp, so Claude can read competitor and AI answer data beside the Moz numbers.

What you can do with Moz and Linkeddit

What is the Moz MCP server, and which endpoint do I need?

Moz's guide says its Model Context Protocol server lets Claude Desktop and coding agents such as Claude Code call the Moz APIs as tools, so you ask in plain language and the client picks the Moz tools. It exposes two endpoints, split by product, and each requires a subscription to the matching product. The guide marks the server as beta, with access limited to account owners for now.

Moz Data (https://api.moz.com/mcp/v1/data) needs a Moz Data API subscription. Its listing shows 26 tools: site metrics, Brand Authority, backlinks and linking domains, keyword metrics, search intent, keyword suggestions, ranking keywords and a quota lookup. Moz Local (https://api.moz.com/mcp/v1/local) needs a Moz Local subscription and lists 32 tools for locations, groups, listing health and local performance. Most teams need only Moz Data.

Authentication is OAuth inside the client, which Moz recommends, or a bearer token that is your Moz API key from the Moz API dashboard. The same key works on both endpoints.

What can Claude do with Moz Data for keywords, rankings and links?

Moz Data covers keyword research, rank checks and link research from one connector. Tools in its listing include DataKeywordMetricsFetch, DataKeywordSuggestionsList and DataKeywordSearchIntentFetch for keywords, DataSiteRankingKeywordList and DataSiteRankingKeywordCount for the terms a domain ranks for, and DataSiteLinkList, DataSiteLinkingDomainList and DataSiteLinkIntersectFetch for links. These read Moz's index. They are not a rank tracker you configure for your own list.

Moz's own MCP dashboard post shows the pattern: one prompt asking Claude to compare bose.com with jbl.com and sennheiser.com ran a competitive snapshot, a follow-up asked for a backlink gap, and a final request turned the files into one HTML dashboard. The post's author calls the link intersect endpoint the best for link gaps because it finds URLs that link to competitors but not to you.

For keyword research in Claude, ask for keyword metrics and suggestions on a seed term, then have Claude group the results by intent. Moz supplies volume and difficulty style data. Linkeddit adds the Google results and the AI Overview recorded for the questions you track, so you can see which keywords already show an answer box that cites someone else.

What does Linkeddit add that Moz does not report?

Linkeddit reports the answer engines and competitor activity, which Moz's tool list does not include. Moz Data's listing has no tool for what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews recommend. Linkeddit records that for your buying questions, with the cited sources, and tracks competitor moves from blogs, changelogs and monitored pages. It all comes with one plan at $60 a month.

Here is a read-only run on Linkeddit's test project, plausible.io. search_competitors_get returned 358 competing domains from 59 checked keywords. matomo.org ranked in the Google top 10 on 11 of them at an average position of 3.73, beat the project on 8, and was cited 23 times by the answer engines in the latest finished run: 21 from ChatGPT and 2 from Google AI Overviews. umami.is was cited 17 times and posthog.com ranked on 12 keywords.

That list is the input Moz is good at consuming. Hand Claude those domains and ask Moz Data for their metrics, ranking keywords and links. Moz explains why a rival's pages are strong. Linkeddit shows where the rival is actually being named to buyers.

The need is real. "I’m curious how other SEOs are tracking AI visibility without turning it into a spreadsheet of manually checked prompts," asked an SEO consultant on Reddit. A recorded answer history is the alternative to that spreadsheet.

What is the Moz Local connector for, and is it relevant to my SaaS?

Moz Local is for businesses with physical locations. Its listing describes managing locations and groups, publishing listings to the networks Moz Local syncs to, flagging field level discrepancies and network sync status, and pulling Google Business Profile impressions and leads, Local Grid rank maps and keyword ranking history. Tools include LocalLocationNetworkFieldIssueList, LocalLocationLocalGridHistoryFetch and LocalLocationRankingHistoryFetch.

Some Moz Local tools change live data. The listing names LocalLocationCreate, LocalLocationUpdate, LocalLocationClose and LocalLocationCancel among its writes, so ask Claude to read first and confirm before it calls one. A software company with no storefronts can skip this endpoint. A multi location brand can use it for listing audits, with Linkeddit checking whether the engines name its locations when buyers ask local questions.

How do I use Moz and Linkeddit together without mixing up the data?

Keep each connector to its own job and put the source next to every number. Moz numbers describe links, authority and its keyword index. Linkeddit numbers describe measured Google results, AI answers and competitor activity on your project. Ask Claude to label each figure with the connector it came from and not to blend them into one score.

A workable order is to start with Linkeddit to find the competitors and questions that matter, use Moz Data for the link and keyword depth on those domains, and finish with one report. The competitor analysis guide on this site gives the exact prompt. Claude acts when you start it, so a weekly report means running the same prompt again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect the Moz MCP server to Claude?+

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, search for Moz, connect Moz Data or Moz Local and complete the OAuth sign-in. In Claude Code, add https://api.moz.com/mcp/v1/data with claude mcp add and finish the sign-in with /mcp. Moz says each endpoint requires the matching Moz subscription.

Is the Moz MCP server free?+

Not on its own. Moz's guide says Moz Data requires a Moz Data API subscription and Moz Local requires a Moz Local subscription. The server itself is a way to reach those products from Claude. Linkeddit is a separate connector and comes with one plan at $60 a month.

What tools does the Moz Data MCP server have?+

Its listing shows 26 tools, including DataSiteMetricsFetch, DataSiteMetricsBrandAuthorityFetch, DataSiteLinkIntersectFetch, DataSiteLinkingDomainList, DataKeywordMetricsFetch, DataKeywordSuggestionsList, DataSiteRankingKeywordList and QuotaLookup. They cover site metrics, links, keywords and rankings from Moz's index, so they answer questions about authority and backlinks, not about what AI engines recommend.

What is the difference between Moz Data and Moz Local?+

Moz Data returns SEO data for any domain: metrics, backlinks, keywords and rankings. Moz Local manages your own business locations and listings and reports local performance, such as Google Business Profile impressions and Local Grid ranks. They are separate endpoints, each with its own subscription, and you can connect one or both.

Can Claude do competitor analysis with Moz?+

Yes. Moz's own post shows Claude Code comparing one brand with two competitors, then running a backlink gap with the link intersect endpoint. Moz covers links, authority and ranking keywords. It does not cover what AI answer engines recommend, which is where adding Linkeddit helps.

What is the best tool to use with Moz for AI answer engine visibility?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month. Moz Data's tool list covers links, keywords and rankings, not what AI engines say. Linkeddit records where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews recommend a competitor instead of you, with cited sources, and Claude can read both connectors in one conversation.

What is the best way to run competitor SEO analysis in Claude?+

Use Linkeddit to find who actually competes and where answer engines name them, then Moz Data for the links and keywords behind those domains. Linkeddit, at $60 a month, supplied 358 competing domains from 59 checked keywords on its test project, so Claude starts from measured rivals, not guesses.

Does Moz track AI Overviews or ChatGPT answers through MCP?+

Moz Data's tool list in the Agent Index shows no tool for AI answers. Its dashboard post mentions GEO and Brand Authority as signals, but that is not an answer tracker. For recorded AI Overviews and answers from five engines, connect Linkeddit beside it.

Can Claude change my Moz account or listings?+

Moz Local can. Its listing names LocalLocationCreate, LocalLocationUpdate, LocalLocationClose and LocalLocationCancel as write actions that change live listings. Ask Claude to read first and confirm each change with you. Moz Data's tools are queries against Moz's index, and Linkeddit's connector tools used here only read.

Why does Claude need a connector for competitor analysis?+

Claude has no live view of rankings or links. ContextBolt's competitor guide makes the point that without a data connection the model guesses a rival's keywords from stale training data. A connector gives it measured numbers: Moz for links and keywords, Linkeddit for AI answers and competitor activity.

Does the Moz MCP server work with Claude Code?+

Yes. Moz's guide gives Claude Code commands for both endpoints, using OAuth or an API key bearer header, and Moz's dashboard post runs its examples in Claude Code. The beta limit still applies: Moz says access is limited to account owners today.

Can I get a weekly Moz and Linkeddit report automatically?+

Not by itself. Claude works when you start it, so a weekly report means you run the same saved prompt, or a scheduler you already use starts a session. Linkeddit keeps its competitor monitors and rank checks running on its own, so fresh data is waiting when you ask.
