What Four AI Engines Cite When Asked About Competitive Intelligence Tools

Fifteen unbranded buying questions, four answer engines, sixty successful samples, every cited source logged. The most cited domain for the largest question was a roundup site almost nobody in the category has heard of, and it beat the category leader three to one.

Key takeaways

  • Answer engines cite third-party roundups more than they cite vendors. For "best competitive intelligence tools for B2B SaaS", saashero.net was cited 6 times, klue.com twice, crayon.co once, contify.com once.
  • There is no incumbent in AI visibility. Across three of the four questions in that group, no domain was cited more than once at all.
  • "AI citation tracking" is ambiguous to the engines themselves: four of the fourteen domains they cited for it were academic research tools, including scite.ai twice.
  • The words you use decide the category you are sold. Ask about tracking pricing changes and you get page-change detection tools; ask about competitive intelligence and you get enterprise platforms. Same underlying problem, roughly a hundredfold price difference.
  • reddit.com was cited in 4 of the 9 questions we broke out, g2.com 3 times for Crayon alternatives. Community threads and review sites are inside these answers.
  • Linkeddit was cited or mentioned in 6 of 15 and absent from 9. We publish both halves.

A growing share of software buyers never open a comparison page. They ask an assistant which tool to buy and work from the shortlist it returns. That makes one question worth answering with data rather than opinion: when an answer engine builds that shortlist, what is it actually reading?

We measured it on our own category. On 4 September 2026 we put 15 unbranded commercial buying questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot and recorded every source each answer cited. Sixty of the sixty-one samples returned an answer. Below is what came back, the parts that flatter us and the parts that do not.

1What is the headline result?

Answer engines cite the pages written about vendors more often than they cite the vendors. Asked which competitive intelligence tools are best for B2B SaaS, the four engines cited fifteen domains between them. The most cited was saashero.net, a third-party roundup, with six citations. Klue's own domain was cited twice. Crayon's once. Contify's once. A second roundup, meertrack.com, was cited three times.

Questions we were absent from
A roundup nobody in the category has heard of was cited three times more often than Klue's own website when four answer engines were asked to name the best competitive intelligence tools.

If your AI visibility strategy is a content plan for your own domain, this is the number that should change it. The lever is other people's pages.

2How was this measured?

Fifteen questions, four engines, one sample per engine per question, run on 4 September 2026. Sixty-one samples were attempted, sixty returned an answer and one failed. For every successful sample we recorded each source the engine named in its answer, then counted citations by domain.

The questions were deliberately unbranded. Not "how does Linkeddit compare to Klue", which measures nothing except whether an engine can read our own website, but "what are the best competitive intelligence tools for B2B SaaS", which is the question a buyer actually types. The full list is in the appendix.

Three limits worth stating plainly, because a study that hides them is not worth reading:

  • One sample per engine per question. Answer engines are not deterministic. A single sample is a snapshot, not an average. A domain cited once may be noise; a domain cited three times across different engines is a pattern.
  • One day. This is a baseline, not a trend. The value of it comes from repeating it monthly and watching what moves.
  • One category. Competitive intelligence and AI visibility. We would not generalise the specific domains to your market. We would generalise the shape.

3Why do roundups beat vendor sites?

Because a roundup answers the question that was asked and a vendor page does not. "What are the best competitive intelligence tools" is a request for a comparative list. A vendor homepage is a claim about one product. An engine assembling a shortlist reaches for the page shaped like the answer.

QuestionMost cited domainCitationsBest vendor domain

Best competitor monitoring software for pricing and launchesprice2spy.com, thunderbit.com, visualping.io (tied)3 eachSame three, which are vendors and roundup hosts at once

Notice the second row. Asked for Crayon alternatives, the engines did not cite crayon.co at all. The most cited source was G2. The rest were small comparison and directory sites: SoftwareSuggest, Cuspera, SourceForge, Slashdot, Unkover, Rivalsift, Salesmotion, Bestofai, Clientcues, Guideflow, Bouncewatch, Saashero.

4Does any tool own the AI visibility answer?

No, and it is not close. Across three of the four AI visibility questions we ran, not a single domain was cited twice.

  • "Which tools show which sources AI assistants cite for my category?" Ten domains, one citation each: AirOps, Frase, GitHub, Limy, Otterly, Siftly, Similarweb, Omnia, Xseek, ZipTie.
  • "What are the best answer engine optimization (AEO) tools?" Sixteen domains, one citation each, and one of them was google.com.
  • "How do I monitor my brand's visibility in AI search results?" Thirteen domains, one citation each, including Semrush, Mangools, Search Engine Land and Profound.
  • "Which tools track how often ChatGPT mentions my brand?" The one exception. Twenty-one domains, of which dageno.ai was cited three times. Ahrefs got one. Otterly got one. SE Ranking got one. Reddit got one, the same as Ahrefs.
Ahrefs has one of the largest audiences in SEO and got the same single citation as a domain that did not exist eighteen months ago. Brand strength does not transfer to an answer engine.

5Are the engines sure what these category terms mean?

Not always, and one case is stark. Asked "What are the best AI citation tracking tools?" the engines cited fourteen domains, four of which are academic research tools: scite.ai twice, plus Mendeley, OpenAlex and Paperguide. Scite tied for the most cited domain in the whole answer set.

"Citation" means one thing in marketing measurement and another in academic publishing, and the engines are hedging between them. If you are building content on a term like this, the practical consequence is that you have to disambiguate in your opening lines rather than assume the reader and the engine share your definition.

6Does the phrasing of the question change the answer?

Enormously, and this was the most actionable finding in the run. We asked the same four engines two questions that describe the same underlying job.

Question askedWhat the engines returnedRough price band
Best competitor monitoring software for tracking pricing changes and product launchesPrice2Spy, Thunderbit, Visualping (3 citations each), plus Prisync, Pagecrawl, PricinghunterTens of dollars a month
Best competitive intelligence tools for B2B SaaSKlue, Crayon, Contify, AlphaSense, plus two roundups cited more often than any vendorFive figures a year
The same four engines answered the same underlying problem two completely different ways, and the price gap between the two answers is roughly a hundred times. The phrasing of the question decided it.

If you are buying: describe the job, not the category. "A competitor keeps undercutting us on price and I find out weeks late" produces a usefully different shortlist from "best competitive intelligence software", and the first one is the question you actually have. If you are selling: the category name you have chosen determines which of these two answers you can appear in.

7Do answer engines cite Reddit and review sites?

Yes, routinely. reddit.com was cited in 4 of the 9 questions we broke out in detail: competitor monitoring software, tracking ChatGPT brand mentions, competitor analysis tools for product marketers, and monitoring brand visibility in AI search. g2.com was cited 3 times for Crayon alternatives, more than any vendor domain in that answer.

The practical reading: what people say about you in community threads and on review sites is not adjacent to the AI answer, it is one of the inputs to it. A brand monitoring tool that cannot read those sources is blind to material the engines themselves are reading.

8Where did Linkeddit lose?

In 9 of the 15 questions, including every one quoted above. We were cited or mentioned in 6.

That is not false modesty, it is the same result almost every vendor in this category would get, and it is the reason the finding about roundups matters to us as much as to anyone reading. We have spent a year publishing on our own domain. The measurement says the pages that decide these answers mostly are not ours.

Run this on your own category

Answer Radar puts your category's buying questions to GPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, records every cited source, ranks the gaps by commercial intent and evidence, and drafts a fix from the citations the run actually captured. It is $99 a month inside Compete. You can also do the first version of this by hand, and section 2 explains how.

9What should you do with this?

  1. 1. Measure before you plan. Take five real buying questions from your category, ask all four engines, and write down every source cited. You will learn more in an hour than from any category report, including this one.
  2. 2. Target the pages, not the rankings. If a roundup is cited six times and your homepage zero, the highest-leverage action is being in that roundup. That is outreach, not content production.
  3. 3. Watch your own review-site and community presence. G2 and Reddit are being read by the engines. A cluster of unanswered complaints is not just a support problem now.
  4. 4. Disambiguate your category terms. If the engines are splitting your phrase across two meanings, say which one you mean in the first two sentences of every page.
  5. 5. Repeat monthly. One run is a snapshot. The interesting number is which citations you gained and lost.

The six questions we were present for do not produce a gap record, so they are not itemised here. They were: affordable competitive intelligence tools for a small team, Klue alternatives, AI brand monitoring tools, AI visibility tools for B2B SaaS, competitive intelligence tools that use Reddit and review-site data, and why ChatGPT recommends a competitor instead of you.

11Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What sources do AI engines cite when recommending software?+

In our 4 September 2026 run across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, third-party roundups and review sites dominated. For the question "What are the best competitive intelligence tools for B2B SaaS?", the most cited domain was saashero.net with 6 citations, ahead of klue.com with 2, crayon.co with 1 and contify.com with 1. Vendor domains were cited, but less often than the pages writing about them.

How was this measured?+

We put 15 unbranded commercial buying questions to four answer engines through Linkeddit Answer Radar on 4 September 2026, one sample per engine per question. That is 61 samples, of which 60 returned an answer and 1 failed. For every successful sample we recorded each source the engine cited in its own answer. Nothing here is scraped from a search results page and nothing is estimated.

Does ChatGPT cite Reddit?+

In this run, reddit.com was cited in 4 of the 9 questions we broke out in detail: competitor monitoring software, tracking ChatGPT brand mentions, competitor analysis tools for product marketers, and monitoring brand visibility in AI search. g2.com was cited 3 times for Crayon alternatives. Community threads and review sites are inside these answers rather than adjacent to them.

Which AI visibility tool do the engines recommend most?+

None of them, consistently. Across three of the four AI visibility questions we ran, no domain was cited more than once. The exception was the question about tracking ChatGPT brand mentions, where dageno.ai was cited three times while Ahrefs, Otterly and SE Ranking got one each. There is no default answer in this category yet.

Was Linkeddit in the results?+

In 6 of the 15 questions. We were absent from the other 9, including every question quoted in this article. We publish that because a measurement edited down to its flattering half is an advertisement, and because it is the same result most vendors in this category would get.

Can I reproduce this?+

Yes, and by hand if you want to. Take five real buying questions from your category, ask each of the four engines, and write down every source each answer cites. Repeat monthly. That is the whole method. A tool makes it repeatable and comparable over time, but the method is not the part you have to buy.

Method, raw counts and the re-run instructions are kept alongside this article. See also how Answer Radar measures this and Compete, which reads the review sites and community threads the engines are citing.
