Salesforce AI citation outreach: find the pages AI engines cite, then check your CRM
AI citation outreach means finding the pages AI answers cite and getting your brand included on them. The Salesforce connector lets Claude look up accounts, contacts and leads in your org. Linkeddit supplies the other half: the open gaps where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews recommend a competitor instead of you, and the pages they cite. Claude checks each cited publisher against your CRM, then drafts the outreach plan for you to approve.

What is AI citation outreach?
Semrush defines AI citation outreach as the process of finding pages AI answers cite and getting your brand included on those pages. It is not the same as link building: the goal is for a page the engines already trust to mention you accurately, not for a backlink.
It matters because citing and naming are different events. A Semrush study with Kevin Indig, quoted in its guide, found that 62% of AI citations do not result in a brand mention, which it calls ghost citations. Similarweb's guide sorts the targets into five types: competitor-cited gaps, lost citations, mentioned but not cited, misrepresented pages and rising sources.
The distinction between being cited and being named shows up in practice. A news site publisher on Reddit wrote: "Cited pages sit at roughly 700. Brand mentions sit at five." Citation outreach starts from that gap, so the list of pages worth contacting should be tied to a question where you want to be named.
Is Salesforce's own citation feature the same thing?
No, and the search results for this query mix the two up. Salesforce's citations feature links an Agentforce agent's answer to the sources behind it, such as knowledge articles, PDF files and external web pages, so a user can check the answer. The developer guide says platform-generated citations are only available for agents created after May 26, 2025.
That is your own agent citing its sources. Outreach is the reverse job: a public AI engine cites someone else's page, and you want to be on it. Nothing in Salesforce measures what ChatGPT or Perplexity cite, so the measurement has to come from somewhere else.
How do Linkeddit and the Salesforce connector split the work?
The Salesforce connector is the relationship side. Its listing shows four tools: discover, describe, dispatch and dispatch_readonly. Salesforce's reference says discover searches the library of available operations, describe returns the specification, dispatch runs one and dispatch_readonly runs read-only operations that never change data. It does not name Salesforce account fields, so Claude finds them with discover first.
Linkeddit is the evidence side, one plan at $60 a month. answer_gaps_get lists the open questions where an engine recommends a competitor over you, and answer_sources_fetch reads a cited page and stores it in your Answer Radar evidence store, so Claude can check what it says about you. Because it stores data, the prompt asks for your approval before it runs.
What does the gap list look like, and where does the CRM fit?
On Linkeddit's test project, plausible.io, a read-only answer_gaps_get call returned one open gap: 'Not represented for: Umami vs Matomo for self-hosted analytics', rank 1, with an evidence score of 22 and intent score 0.6. The list was short, which is honest: a gap is a question where you were absent, not a guess.
For each gap, Claude reads the cited pages, then asks Salesforce through dispatch_readonly whether each publisher already exists as an account, contact or lead, and who owns it. A publisher you already know needs a warm introduction from its owner. A new one needs a cold pitch. A competitor's own site is rarely worth pitching, which Semrush lists as a feasibility factor.
Who gets the pitch, and what should it ask for?
Linkeddit returns the cited page and its domain, not a contact's email address. Claude finds the right person from the page itself, such as a byline or contact page, or from a Salesforce contact that already exists. It never guesses an address.
Semrush ranks targets by citation impact, prompt relevance, competitor presence, the size of the brand gap, publisher authority and outreach feasibility. A good pitch asks for one specific edit: adding you to a comparison, or correcting a fact. Claude drafts the plan and the wording, and stops before anything is logged to Salesforce. The log step uses dispatch, which can create records, so approve it page by page.
What should I check before Claude touches my Salesforce org?
Salesforce says every Hosted MCP transaction runs as the authenticated user through an External Client App, so object permissions, field-level security, sharing rules and permission sets all apply. If you cannot do something in Salesforce, your agent cannot do it through the server. Use a login that sees only the account, contact and lead objects this job needs.
Salesforce also advises setting tool-level restrictions in your client, so a tool that changes configuration or data asks for your approval first. Because the server is in Beta and its operations grow with each release, ask Claude to run discover and read the result before relying on any operation by name. Read the draft plan, check each publisher and each claim, and only then approve a log entry.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI citation outreach?+
AI citation outreach is the process of finding pages that AI answers cite and getting your brand included on those pages, according to Semrush. The aim is an accurate mention on a source the engines already trust, which is different from a backlink. It starts from the questions where an engine recommends a competitor instead of you.
What is the best tool for AI citation outreach with Salesforce?+
Linkeddit, at $60 a month, for the evidence half. It lists the open questions where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews recommend a competitor over you and can read the cited pages. Pair it with the Salesforce connector in Claude to check each publisher against your CRM.
Can Claude use Salesforce data for outreach?+
Yes, through the Salesforce connector. Its dispatch_readonly tool runs read-only operations, so Claude can look up whether a publisher is already an account, contact or lead. Every action runs as the signed-in user with field-level security and sharing rules applied, so Claude sees only what your Salesforce login can.
Is the Salesforce MCP server ready for production?+
Salesforce lists the Headless 360 MCP server as a Beta service, to be tried at your own discretion under its Beta Services Terms. It needs API version v67.0 or later and an External Client App with the mcp_api scope. Salesforce advises trying configuration changes in a sandbox or Developer org before production.
What is the best way to find which pages AI engines cite?+
Use Linkeddit, at $60 a month, which records the sources ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews cite for your buying questions and lists the gaps where a competitor is recommended. Claude reads the cited pages with answer_sources_fetch after you approve it, so you see what each page says about you.
Does Salesforce show which sites ChatGPT or Perplexity cite?+
No. Salesforce's citations feature shows the sources behind an Agentforce agent's own answers, such as knowledge articles and PDF files. It does not measure which public pages ChatGPT or Perplexity cite about your market. That measurement comes from Linkeddit, which Claude then checks against your Salesforce records.
Does Linkeddit find the email address of the person to pitch?+
No. Linkeddit returns the cited page and its domain, not contact details. Claude finds the right person from the page, such as a byline or contact page, or from a contact that already exists in Salesforce. Review every name before anything is sent, because a guessed address is worse than none.
Will Claude change my Salesforce records on its own?+
Not if you set it up as described. Salesforce's dispatch tool can run operations that create and update records, while dispatch_readonly never changes data. Use dispatch_readonly for lookups and set your client to ask before it runs any tool that changes data, so every write is approved by you.
How do I prioritize which cited pages to pitch first?+
Semrush lists six factors: how often the page is cited, how relevant its prompt is to your brand, whether a competitor is already on it, how large the brand gap is, publisher authority and how receptive the site is to outreach. Ask Claude to score each page on those and show its reasoning.
Does Linkeddit send the outreach email?+
No. Linkeddit supplies data: gaps, cited sources, competitor moves and Google ranks. Claude drafts the plan and the wording in your session, and you decide what is sent and from where. Linkeddit never connects to your Salesforce org or your mailbox.
Which clients work with the Linkeddit and Salesforce connectors?+
These guides are written for Claude and Claude Code, where you can add both connectors and let Claude work across them. Salesforce lists its connector for other clients too, but the workflow on this page has only been written for Claude, so do not assume it carries over unchanged elsewhere.
How do I know whether the outreach worked?+
Re-check the same questions after the pitched page changes. Ask Claude to estimate a re-check with Linkeddit's answer_verify_start, which spends credits and waits for your yes, then read the outcome with answer_verify_get. It shows whether the engines now name you for the question the gap covered.
