Exa MCP in Claude: search the web for what Linkeddit shows the AI engines cite

The Exa MCP server gives Claude a live web search and a code and documentation search. It answers what is on the web right now. Linkeddit answers a different question: what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews recommend for your buyers, which domains they cite, and how that changes over time. Use Linkeddit to find the citation gap, then Exa to go and read the pages behind it.

Linkeddit connector

Add https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp as a connector and sign in. Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http linkeddit https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp.

Setup guide

Exa connector

  1. Add Exa from Claude's connector directory (Add connectors, search for Exa) and sign in. In Claude Code, Exa's own page says to open /plugin, find Exa in the marketplace and finish authentication.
  2. Add the Linkeddit connector at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp.
  3. If Exa returns a rate limit error (429), Exa's docs say the connection is on its free rate limits: sign in with OAuth or add your own API key, then reconnect.

What does the Exa MCP server do, and what does it not do?

Exa's listing in the Agent Index shows a read-only connector with two tools: web_search_exa, which searches the web and returns page content, and get_code_context_exa, which finds code examples and documentation. Exa's docs add two more that you switch on yourself: web_search_advanced_exa for domain, category and date filters, and agent_run for research that takes more than one search.

That is a search engine for Claude. It sees whatever the open web shows today. It cannot tell you what an answer engine said to a buyer yesterday, which sites those answers cited, or whether a competitor's pricing page changed last week. Those are measurements and stored history, and no web search returns them.

What does Linkeddit add that a web search cannot?

Linkeddit measures what the answer engines say. On its test project, plausible.io, Linkeddit read back the latest citation share for each engine. In Google AI Mode, plausible.io and usefathom.com were each cited in 8 of 66 cited-domain slots (12%). In ChatGPT the top cited domain was matomo.org at 10 of 183 (5%), and plausible.io was cited 8 times. Two engines, Perplexity and one Claude measuring instrument, returned only errors in those runs and are shown as unmeasured, not as zero.

Linkeddit also keeps competitor history. Compete stores dated snapshots of competitor pricing, changelog and landing pages and grades each competitor move. One plan covers it all at $60 a month. Linkeddit does not write the analysis. Your own Claude does that, using this data.

How do I use Exa to find sites the AI engines cite and reach them?

Start from Linkeddit's cited domains, then use Exa to read them. Ask Linkeddit for the domains each engine cited for your category, pick the ones that are neither you nor a competitor (on the test project these included bootstrap.build, itechguides.com and analytics-alternatives.com), and have Claude run web_search_exa for each domain's pages on your topic. The result is a list of pages that already shape the answers, with their text in front of Claude.

People ask for this by name. A news site publisher wrote that cited pages sit at roughly 700 while brand mentions sit at five. Linkeddit supplies the citation counts. Exa's search is how you read those pages and see why they are cited, before you decide whom to contact. Exa's advanced search takes an includeDomains field, which narrows a search to the domains you name.

How do I use Exa for competitor research beside Linkeddit?

Use Linkeddit for the stable facts and Exa for the open question. Linkeddit's competitor view lists who ranks in the Google top 10 for your tracked keywords. On the test project, matomo.org ranked in the top 10 for 11 of 59 checked keywords at an average position of 3.73, and ChatGPT cited it 21 times in the latest run. Exa can then search for what the web says about that competitor right now, such as a launch or a review.

Competely's guide to competitor analysis with Claude gives the same caution for any web-search method: verify prices against the live pricing page and ask for a source URL beside every claim. A search connector hands Claude pages, and Claude can still misread them. Linkeddit's page snapshots carry a content hash and a timestamp, so a change is a recorded fact.

Which Exa tool should I use, and how do I connect it?

Start with web_search_exa. Exa's docs say to keep it for ordinary searches because it gives the model a smaller tool surface, and to enable web_search_advanced_exa only when you need explicit domain filters, date ranges or freshness control. For lists of results checked against criteria, Exa documents agent_run, which needs OAuth or an API key and is usage-based on Exa's side.

To connect, add Exa and Linkeddit in Claude. Exa supports OAuth sign-in and an x-api-key header. If tools do not appear after you edit the URL, Exa's troubleshooting says an explicit tools parameter replaces the default list, so every tool you want must be in it. Neither connector writes to your site, so there is nothing to approve.

What should I measure after I find the pages?

Measure share of the answers, not just the number of pages you found. Linkeddit reports presence, recommendation rate, share of voice and citation share per engine. On the test project, Plausible Analytics was present in 85% of admissible Google AI Mode samples (17 of 20) and 100% of Google AI Overviews samples (15 of 15), a count that moves when new pages enter the cited set.

Re-read those numbers after your outreach or new pages have had time to be picked up. A page found with Exa that never changes a citation count was not a lever. Keep that list so the next round starts from evidence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Exa MCP server?+

The Exa MCP server lets an AI client such as Claude search the live web through Exa. Exa's Agent Index listing shows two read-only tools, web_search_exa and get_code_context_exa, and its docs describe optional advanced search and an agent_run tool. It returns web pages, not measurements of what answer engines say.

What is the URL for the Exa MCP server?+

The hosted Exa MCP server is at https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp. Exa's docs say it works anonymously with rate limits, and that signing in with OAuth or adding an API key raises them. The Linkeddit connector is separate, at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp, and you add both in Claude.

How do I add Exa to Claude?+

In Claude, open Connectors, search for Exa, add it and sign in. In Claude Code, Exa's page says to open /plugin, search for Exa in the marketplace, install it and finish authentication. Then add Linkeddit at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp so Claude has both web search and answer-engine data.

Is the Exa MCP server free?+

Exa's docs say the hosted server works without a key on free rate limits, and a 429 error means you have hit them. Signing in with OAuth or adding an API key moves you to your own plan and limits. The agent_run tool needs OAuth or a key. Check Exa's pricing page for current terms.

What is the best tool to find which sites AI engines cite for my category?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month. It records the cited domains for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, with each domain's share. On its test project the top ChatGPT citation was matomo.org at 10 of 183. Exa is the right tool to then read those pages on the live web.

What is the best way to use Claude for competitor research?+

Pair Linkeddit with a web search connector. Linkeddit, at $60 a month, supplies who ranks in Google, who the engines cite and dated competitor changes. Exa or another search tool lets Claude read current pages. Ask Claude to put a source URL beside every claim and to verify prices on the live page.

Can Exa tell me what ChatGPT recommends?+

No. Exa searches the web. It does not ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews your buyers' questions, and it does not keep the answers over time. Linkeddit does that, and records which brands each engine named and recommended, so the numbers stay comparable week to week.

Does Linkeddit replace Exa?+

No. They do different jobs. Exa is a web search tool for open questions and for reading pages. Linkeddit is a measurement and history tool for answer-engine recommendations, Google ranks and competitor moves. A good workflow uses both: Linkeddit finds where you lose, and Exa reads the pages involved.

What does Exa's agent_run tool do?+

Exa's docs describe agent_run as a tool for research that takes more than one search, such as building a list and checking each item against criteria. It needs OAuth or an API key, and if a run takes longer, the tool reports a running status with an id you pass back to continue.

Why do my Exa tools not show up in Claude?+

Exa's troubleshooting says an explicit tools parameter in the URL replaces the default tool list, so check every tool you want is named there, then restart the client. Exa also says agent_run only appears after you connect with sign-in or an API key. Those are Exa's settings, not Linkeddit's.

Which clients work with Exa and Linkeddit together?+

These guides are written for Claude and Claude Code, where you can add both connectors and have Claude work across them. Exa lists other clients on its own page, but the Linkeddit workflows here have only been written for Claude, so do not assume they carry over unchanged elsewhere.

How do I find sites that ChatGPT cites so I can reach out?+

Ask Linkeddit which domains each engine cited for your tracked questions, set aside your own and your competitors', and have Claude read the rest with Exa. Linkeddit shows what is cited, and the page text shows why. Contact the sites yourself, since neither tool sends messages for you.

Can Claude run this Exa and Linkeddit workflow on a schedule?+

Not by itself. Claude works when you start it, so you run the same prompt when you want an update. Linkeddit's side keeps measuring on its own schedule, so the numbers are ready when you ask. Exa's search runs only when Claude calls it.
