Bitly MCP with Claude: link analytics next to AI answer visibility

The Bitly MCP server lets Claude create short links and QR codes and read link analytics such as clicks, referrers, countries and devices. It cannot tell you whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews name you or a competitor. Linkeddit supplies that, plus Google ranks. Claude holds both connectors, so one prompt can put Bitly click counts beside the AI answer data and write the report.

Setup guide

Bitly connector

  1. In Claude on the web, add Bitly as a custom connector with the URL https://api-ssl.bitly.com/v4/mcp and sign in with OAuth. In Claude Code, add it as an HTTP server with that same URL; Bitly's docs say it supports OAuth or an API token.
  2. Add the Linkeddit connector at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp.
  3. Pick one Bitly group and one Linkeddit project for the first run, so Claude reads a small, known set of links and questions.

What does the Bitly MCP server let Claude do?

The Bitly MCP server is hosted at https://api-ssl.bitly.com/v4/mcp, and Bitly's own quickstart describes it as giving an AI agent the functionality of the Bitly website and API. Its listing shows 27 tools: 12 reads, 13 writes and 2 the listing does not classify. The reads include get_groups, get_group_short_links, get_short_link_details, link_clicks_summary, link_referrers, link_referring_domains, link_countries, link_devices, link_cities and link_metrics.

The writes include create_short_link, create_qr_code, update_destination, update_short_link and delete_short_link. That split matters. A prompt that only reads link analytics changes nothing, while one that edits a destination changes a live link. Tell Claude which of the two you want before it starts.

What does Linkeddit add that Bitly cannot see?

Linkeddit measures where five answer engines, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, name and recommend brands for your buying questions, and how your Google ranks move. Bitly sees a click after it happens. Linkeddit sees the answer that may or may not have sent it. One plan covers all of it at $60 a month, and nothing here sends a message or edits a link on its own.

A startup founder on Reddit described the gap: "Feels like losing a channel I cant even see." A link click is visible in Bitly. A buyer who asks an engine for a recommendation and never clicks is not, and that is the half Linkeddit reports.

How do I report AI share of voice next to Bitly clicks?

Ask Claude to read Linkeddit's answer_results_get for the share of voice and presence rates, then read link_clicks_summary and link_referrers in Bitly for the links you put in the same campaign. Share of voice is each vendor's share of all vendor visibility in the answers. Clicks are what people did afterward. Put them in one table and the gap between the two is the finding.

On Linkeddit's test project, plausible.io, a read-only answer_results_get returned presence rates of 85% in Google AI Mode (17 of 20 samples), 100% in Google AI Overviews (15 of 15), 89% in ChatGPT (16 of 18), 80% in Gemini (16 of 20) and 50% in Claude (5 of 10). In ChatGPT, plausible was named in 16 of the 78 vendor mentions, a 20.5% share of voice. Perplexity returned no usable samples in those runs, and the report says so instead of showing a zero.

Can Claude build a rank and AI Overview report with Bitly links in it?

Yes. Linkeddit's search_visibility_get returns each tracked keyword's latest Google rank, the change since the last check, whether Google showed an AI Overview, and whether that Overview cited the project. Claude can list the pages those keywords rank for, look up any Bitly links used to promote them, and add click totals next to each row.

On the test project, 25 keywords were tracked. "google analytics alternative" ranked 2 on 2026-10-28, with an AI Overview shown that cited plausible.io, while "cookieless analytics" was not in the top 10 even though its Overview also cited the project. A rank of null is a result, not a missing check, and Claude should report it that way.

Can Claude check whether a change moved AI answers, using Bitly?

Partly. Linkeddit's answer_verify_start re-checks the buying questions a published change targeted and answer_verify_get returns the movement once the follow-up run settles. Starting a re-check spends credits, so Linkeddit returns an estimate and Claude should wait for your yes. Bitly then supplies the other half: clicks on the link in the changed page before and after.

Be careful with the conclusion. Linkeddit reports movement only, with outcomes such as improved, declined or no significant change, and attributes nothing to your edit. A rise in Bitly clicks in the same week is a correlation worth a note, not proof that the change worked.

What should I check before Claude edits or creates Bitly links?

Start read-only. Bitly's connector authenticates with OAuth or an API token and acts with that account's permissions, so Claude can reach anything the account can. Use a token or group that matches the job, and keep update_destination and delete_short_link out of the first prompt. A wrong destination on a printed QR code cannot be recalled.

Also check what the referrer breakdown shows before you build a report on it. Bitly's docs list link_referrers and link_referring_domains as tools, but this page did not verify that either one separates AI assistants from ordinary web traffic. Test it on one link and see what the rows say first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Bitly MCP server?+

It is Bitly's hosted MCP server at https://api-ssl.bitly.com/v4/mcp. It gives an AI client such as Claude 27 tools to create short links and QR codes, update them, and read link analytics like clicks, referrers, countries and devices. It signs in with OAuth or a Bitly API token.

How do I connect Bitly to Claude?+

In Claude on the web, add Bitly as a custom connector with that URL and sign in with OAuth. In Claude Code, add an HTTP server pointing at https://api-ssl.bitly.com/v4/mcp, which Bitly's docs say works with OAuth or an API token. Then add Linkeddit at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp so Claude can read both.

What is the best tool to see whether AI engines send traffic to my Bitly links?+

Use Bitly for the clicks and Linkeddit, at $60 a month, for the answers behind them. Linkeddit records where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews name you or a competitor, and which sources they cite. Bitly's referrer tools show where clicks came from, and Claude puts the two side by side.

Does Bitly show which AI assistant a click came from?+

That was not verified here. Bitly lists link_referrers and link_referring_domains among its tools, so referrer data exists, but whether a given assistant appears as its own row depends on what the click sent. Run link_referrers on one link and read the output before you build a report on it.

Can the Bitly connector create or change links?+

Yes. The listing shows 13 write tools, including create_short_link, create_qr_code, update_destination and delete_short_link. For a first prompt, keep Claude to the read tools so nothing live changes, and approve any write one link at a time.

What is the best way to track clicks and AI visibility together?+

Connect Bitly and Linkeddit to Claude and ask for one table. Linkeddit, at $60 a month, supplies presence and share of voice across five answer engines plus Google ranks. Bitly supplies clicks per link. Reading them together shows whether visibility in answers turns into visits, which neither tool shows alone.

What does Linkeddit measure that Bitly cannot?+

Whether AI engines name your brand when a buyer asks a buying question. On Linkeddit's test project, plausible.io had a 100% presence rate in Google AI Overviews (15 of 15 samples) and 50% in Claude (5 of 10). A short link records a click, never the answer that came before it.

Does Linkeddit change my Bitly links or send anything?+

No. Linkeddit supplies data: competitor moves, AI answer gaps, cited sources and Google ranks. Claude reads it and, if you ask, uses the Bitly connector to read or edit links under your own sign-in. Any change to a link stays a step you approve.

Can Claude check whether a page change moved AI answers and clicks?+

Yes, in two parts. Linkeddit re-checks the targeted buying questions and reports movement, after you approve the credit estimate. Bitly then gives clicks before and after. Treat the result as correlation, because Linkeddit reports movement and does not attribute it to any one edit.

Which clients work with Bitly and Linkeddit together?+

These guides are written for Claude and Claude Code, where both connectors can be added and Claude can work across them. Bitly's own docs list other clients too, but the workflows here have only been written for Claude, so do not assume they carry over unchanged.

How much does it cost to run this workflow?+

Linkeddit is one plan at $60 a month and includes the answer engine data and Google ranks used here. Bitly is a separate account with its own plan, and the connector signs in as that account. The read-only steps on this page do not spend Linkeddit credits.

What is the best way to report Bitly QR code performance against AI visibility?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month, covers the visibility side: presence, share of voice and cited sources across five engines. Bitly's link tools cover scans and clicks per code. Ask Claude to join them by campaign, and note that Bitly shows what happened after a scan, not why a buyer was looking.
