Apify in Claude: what the connector does and how Linkeddit tells it where to look

The Apify connector lets Claude find and run Apify Actors, which are scrapers and crawlers from the Apify Store, then read the results. It reaches Apify's MCP server at https://mcp.apify.com. Apify collects public web pages. It does not know which competitors matter or what the answer engines say about you. Linkeddit supplies that measured data, and Claude joins the two.

Setup guide

Apify connector

  1. Add https://mcp.apify.com in Claude as a connector, or install it from Claude's connector directory. Apify recommends OAuth: add the URL with no headers and approve access in the browser window that opens.
  2. In Claude Code, Apify's docs describe an Apify plugin that bundles the server and Agent Skills. A bearer token works too, sent as an Authorization header.
  3. Add the Linkeddit connector at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp.
  4. Tell Claude which Actors it may run and what to do before an Actor that costs money.

What you can do with Apify and Linkeddit

What does the Apify connector do in Claude?

Apify's MCP documentation says the server lets AI apps find and run Actors, access storage and results, and search Apify's own docs. Its tool groups are actors (search-actors, fetch-actor-details, call-actor), docs, runs (get-actor-run, get-actor-run-list, get-actor-run-log, abort-actor-run), storage (get-dataset-items and others), tasks and schedules. The default set also includes two Actors, apify/rag-web-browser and apify/web-fetch.

One detail trips people up. According to Apify's docs, call-actor returns run status and storage IDs, not the scraped rows, so Claude has to read the output with get-dataset-items afterwards. The Agent Index listing for the connector shows a single tool, readme, so check Apify's own docs for the live tool set rather than the directory card.

Without an Apify account Claude can use only search-actors, fetch-actor-details, search-apify-docs and fetch-apify-docs. Every other tool needs a token. Apify also states that full-permission Actors are excluded from search and execution through the server.

How do I connect Apify to Claude and Claude Code?

Add the server URL https://mcp.apify.com as a connector and approve the sign-in. Apify lists OAuth as the recommended route, a bearer token as the alternative, and a local stdio server started with npx -y @apify/actors-mcp-server when you prefer to run it yourself.

In Claude Code, Apify documents a plugin. Google's AI Overview for the query "apify claude" describes the same split: the desktop route uses the MCP server, and the terminal route uses the plugin. Add Linkeddit at https://mcp.linkeddit.com/mcp beside it, and Claude can use both in one session.

What does Apify not know that Linkeddit does?

Apify scrapes whatever you point it at. It does not choose the targets. A guide on use-apify.com begins its workflow with "scope the competitor URL list", then names Actors such as Website Content Crawler and Google Search Results Scraper. The list itself is left to you.

On Linkeddit's own test project, plausible.io, the competitor footprint covers 358 domains drawn from 59 checked keywords. matomo.org ranks in the Google top 10 on 11 of them, and was cited 23 times across the AI answer engines in the latest finished run, 21 of them by ChatGPT. umami.is ranks on 7 keywords, with 17 AI answer citations. Those are the pages worth crawling first, and Linkeddit names them with evidence.

A founder describes the usual alternative this way. "What surprises me is that many companies still rely on spreadsheets, saved tabs, screenshots, and occasional alerts for competitor tracking," wrote a startup founder on Reddit. A measured competitor list replaces the saved tabs, and Apify's runs replace the screenshots.

How do I run competitor analysis with Apify and Claude?

The workflow has four steps: Linkeddit names the competitor domains and the pages that beat you, Apify's Actors collect those pages' content, Claude compares them, and you decide what to change. The full guide, with the exact prompt and a measured run, is the Apify competitor analysis page linked from this hub.

The search results for the connector-plus-competitor query show why the pairing is open. Skill directories such as mcpmarket describe Claude running Apify scrapers for pricing, reviews and engagement on platforms like Google Maps, Booking.com, Instagram and TikTok. None of them starts from the competitor list Google rank data produces.

Can Apify help me reach the sites AI engines cite?

Partly, and the data comes first. Linkeddit's Answer Radar records which pages the five engines cite when they answer your buying questions, and answer_gaps_get lists the questions where an engine recommended someone else. On the test project the top open gap is "Not represented for: 'Umami vs Matomo for self-hosted analytics'", with a confidence of 1 and an evidence score of 22.

Reading the cited pages is a separate step. answer_sources_fetch does that, and it spends credits, so Linkeddit returns an estimate first and Claude should wait for your yes. Once Claude has the cited URLs, Apify can crawl those pages, for example to collect the author and contact details a page publishes. Claude then drafts the outreach. Nothing here sends a message, and you review every draft.

What should I check before Claude runs an Actor?

Check what the run costs and what it is allowed to touch. Apify bills its Actors on its own plan, separate from Linkeddit's $60 a month, and Apify describes pay-per-event Actors that can be paid per request. Ask Claude to call fetch-actor-details first and report the Actor's inputs and pricing model before it calls call-actor.

The use-apify guide covers legal boundaries and cost estimates but, on a read of it, says little about failed runs or site layout changes. Ask Claude to read get-actor-run for the status of every run and to say so when one fails, because a half-empty dataset looks like a quiet competitor.

Frequently asked questions

What does Apify do in Claude?+

The Apify connector lets Claude search the Apify Store for Actors, which are ready-made scrapers and crawlers, run them, and read the results. Apify's docs list tools such as search-actors, call-actor, get-actor-run and get-dataset-items. It collects public web data; it does not decide which sites matter.

How do I use Apify in Claude?+

Add https://mcp.apify.com as a connector in Claude and approve the OAuth sign-in. Then describe the data you want, and Claude searches for an Actor, runs it and reads the dataset. In Claude Code, Apify documents a plugin that bundles the server and Agent Skills. Add Linkeddit beside it for the competitor list.

What is Apify MCP?+

Apify MCP is Apify's Model Context Protocol server at https://mcp.apify.com. It exposes Apify's platform to AI clients: finding and running Actors, reading run results and storage, and searching Apify's documentation. Apify also publishes a local version you start with npx -y @apify/actors-mcp-server and an Apify API token.

Is Apify free to use in Claude?+

Apify bills separately from Claude and from Linkeddit, so check Apify's own pricing page for your plan. Without an account, Claude can use only the search and docs tools, such as search-actors and fetch-actor-details. Running an Actor needs a token. Linkeddit's side is $60 a month.

What is the best way to do competitor analysis with Apify in Claude?+

Start with Linkeddit, at $60 a month, to name the competitors worth scraping. It lists the domains ranking in the Google top 10 on your keywords and how often the five AI engines cite them. Then have Claude run an Apify Actor on those pages and compare the results with your own.

Can Apify tell me which competitors to scrape?+

Not by itself. Apify runs the Actor you choose against the pages you give it. Linkeddit supplies the list from measured data: on its test project it found 358 competing domains across 59 checked keywords, with the ones that beat the project ranked first. Claude passes the top domains to Apify as inputs.

What is the best tool to find which sites AI engines cite for my category?+

Linkeddit, at $60 a month. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews your buying questions and records which brands and pages each one cites. Apify is useful afterwards, for crawling the cited pages Linkeddit finds. Apify alone does not know which pages the engines cite.

Does Linkeddit scrape websites?+

No. Linkeddit supplies measured data: competitor moves, Google ranks, and what the AI answer engines say and cite. Collecting the content of a competitor's pages is the job Apify does. Keeping the two separate means the competitor list is evidence, and the scrape is something you start deliberately.

Why does Claude not show the results after call-actor?+

According to Apify's docs, call-actor returns the run status and storage IDs, not the scraped rows. Claude has to follow with get-dataset-items to read the output. If a result looks empty, ask Claude to check get-actor-run for the status before trusting the dataset.

Which clients work with Apify and Linkeddit together?+

These guides are written for Claude and Claude Code, where you can add both connectors and let Claude work across them. Apify documents the Claude Desktop route through its MCP server and the Claude Code route through a plugin. The workflows here have not been written for other assistants.

Can Claude run an Apify scrape on a schedule?+

Apify can. Its docs list create-schedule, get-schedule, update-schedule and delete-schedule among the server's tools, so Claude can set up a schedule inside Apify. Claude itself acts only when you start it. Linkeddit's competitor monitors run on their own weekly clock, so the competitor data is fresh when you ask.

Is there anything better than Apify for competitor research?+

It depends on the job. Apify is strong at collecting page content and reviews at scale. For deciding which competitors matter and where AI engines recommend them instead of you, Linkeddit supplies measured rank and citation data that a scraper cannot. Most teams need the list first and the scrape second.
