Track and Win Google AI Overviews With Answer Radar
Google AI Overviews is the fifth Answer Radar engine, beside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and it is on for every project. It needs its own reading because Google shows an Overview on some searches and none on others. This guide covers what the engine records, how to audit and read it, and how to act on it.
Quick Answer
Answer Radar loads a rendered desktop Google results page for your project's geography and records whether an AI Overview appeared, who it recommended, and which publishers it cited. An absent Overview is stored as absence, never as a failure and never as zero visibility. Presence and recommendation count only searches where an Overview appeared; how often one appeared is the appearance rate.
- Appearance rate is shown divided by shown plus absent. Provider errors sit on neither side.
- Google's availability page (read 6 September 2026) lists no AI Overviews in China, Iran, Cuba or North Korea; runs there record a blocked sample and spend nothing.

What the engine records, and how it differs from the assistants
The four assistants answer every question you ask. Google does not. For each approved question, Answer Radar searches a desktop Google results page for the run's geography, United States by default, and looks for an AI Overview. If one is there, the sample is recorded like any other engine's: answer text, brands named, whether yours was recommended, cited sources. If none is there, the sample is recorded with status empty and reason not shown.
Sources are the second difference. An Overview's links are often opaque Google redirects, so Answer Radar stores the publisher alongside each citation, and cited domains, citation share and competitor-domain flags work as for the other engines.
One dated example. On 6 September 2026 the search 'best CRM for small business' showed an Overview naming Zoho CRM as the top overall pick, with HubSpot CRM, Pipedrive, Salesforce Starter Suite and Bigin alongside, citing eight sources. The same day, 'how to choose a CRM for a small business' showed no Overview. Single checks, not rates.
Running the first audit that includes it
Nothing extra to enable. The project form asks for Domain, Brand name, Competitors, Buyer segment, Category, Geography and Language. Geography decides which country's Google results page is loaded; blank means the United States.
Press Run audit. The Run audit dialog shows an estimate such as '12 approved questions across 5 answer engines', with Google AI Overviews as one of the five. Press Confirm & run. An absent Overview costs the same as a shown one, because the page was still loaded and read.
- Use the exact phrasing buyers type, and keep the set frozen between runs. A poster in r/SEO, in the thread 'How are everyone tracking & handling citations in AI Overviews', put it plainly: 'one answer isn't a rank.'
Reading the Google AI Overviews rows
Open a run from History. Under the engine heading Google AI Overviews, every question has a row. Where Google showed an Overview, the row carries the answer. Where it did not, the row carries the chip No Overview and the sentence 'No AI Overview appeared for this search.' The run summary adds a stat labelled No AI Overview with the count of such rows.
Read those rows as a fact about Google, not about you. Absent Overviews are excluded from presence and recommendation, so five questions with an Overview and seven without give rates over five, not twelve, and the disclosure block says so. Counting absence as a miss would turn a search Google chose not to answer into a problem you cannot fix.
From an absent or competitor-cited Overview to a content decision
When an Overview recommended a competitor, you have an ordinary gap: open it, read what the Overview said, and look at the cited publishers. If a review site or community thread is the source, the fix is a mention there. If a competitor's own page is cited, the content gap view shows which requirement your pages fail.
When no Overview appeared, there is no answer to win yet and no gap is raised. Watch the appearance rate across runs; once the question triggers an Overview, the next run records who it recommends.
Drafting is your assistant's job, not ours. Pull the gap and its evidence through the connector, have your assistant draft the page or reply, save it as a fix, then re-run the audit. A poster in r/GEO_optimization, in 'How Are You Tracking Google AI Overview Visibility for Your Website?', named the trap: 'A site can be cited as a source without being recommended.' Recommendation is the number to re-measure.
Where the numbers appear
In the app, the project overview shows a stat labelled Overview appearance with a value such as '9 of 12 searches'; each run page carries the No AI Overview count and the rows above.
Through the connector, answer_metrics_get and answer_trends_get return the appearance rate in every Google AI Overviews segment's disclosure block, beside the sample counts. In the weekly brief the engine's line is labelled Overview appearance.
FAQ
Most of my questions say No Overview. Is the engine broken?
No. Google shows an AI Overview on some searches and not others, and Answer Radar records the absence with reason not shown. A provider failure is a different status, error, and is excluded from the appearance rate. Rows reading error rather than No Overview are the signal to check.
Can Search Console tell me whether I appear in AI Overviews?
Not as a separate view for most sites today. Search Console folds AI Overview impressions into overall Search performance; Google announced dedicated generative AI reports in June 2026 for a subset of sites first. Even then, an impression says a page was shown, not whether your brand was recommended. Answer Radar reads the answer itself.
If an Overview cites my page, does that count as recommending me?
It counts as presence, not recommendation. A page cited for a fact while the Overview names a competitor as the pick is a gap. Recommendation is judged from the answer text and is always lower than or equal to presence.
Can I compare my appearance rate with a tool that says Overviews trigger on most keywords?
No. That figure is over a tool's keyword database. Yours is over your approved questions, in your geography, in this window. Compare it with your earlier runs.
