Key takeaways
- Use a fixed buyer-question panel and show results separately by engine and collection conditions.
- Keep brand mentions, recommendations and linked citations separate. Put valid and failed counts beside every rate.
- A measured answer is an observation. Website traffic, qualified inquiries and revenue require separate evidence.
- Download the blank CSV to retain an audit trail instead of sending an unexplained dashboard score.
1How should I report AI visibility to a client?
Give the client a short decision summary backed by a reproducible answer log. State which buyer questions were checked, where and when they were checked, how many answers were successfully captured, which brands appeared and which pages were cited. Then name one action and the next measurement date.
| Report layer | What to show | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Question coverage | Buyer task, exact question, panel version, engine, mode, location, language and dates | The scope of the observation |
| Observed answers | Raw answer reference, mention, recommendation, cited source and failure status | What the sampled answers actually contained |
| Change and action | Comparable baseline, changed source/page, owner and next check | A testable next step |
| Business outcomes | Tagged or observable referrals, qualified inquiries and conversion definitions | The outcomes your analytics can support |
This is a reporting method, not a new visibility index. It works in a spreadsheet or with an export from a tracker that preserves the underlying answers.
2What are agencies actually struggling to explain?
In a September 1 discussion on r/SEO_LLM, practitioners debated whether to include brand mentions, competitor comparisons, citations and share of voice in client reports. Visible replies asked for run counts, stable question selection and a clear distinction between a baseline and its later movement.
A separate r/MarketingAutomation discussion raised the time cost of manual prompts, screenshots and notes. Some replies proposed automating collection while reviewing interpretation. Several participants recommended products, including self-disclosed vendors, so these are workflow questions rather than independent evidence that a particular tool works.
Our buyer-question research note documents the selected sample and its limits. These discussions help define the report's job; they do not measure how common the problem is.
3Which buyer questions should go in the report?
Start with the client's actual buyer tasks, then document the evidence used to choose questions. Search Console queries, sales objections, support questions and relevant public discussions are observable inputs. They do not reveal every prompt people type into a private AI conversation.
Separate discovery questions, comparisons and branded checks. A question naming the client measures a different task from an unbranded request for options. For each question, record the audience, product, decision and evidence source. Agree on exclusions before collecting answers.
Keep a fixed panel for period comparisons and version any expanded panel separately. If a service, region or question changes, explain the change rather than treating a new set as the old baseline. Our buyer prompt guide and Search Console workflow cover selection in more detail.
4How do I report answers that vary or fail?
Record repeated observations under comparable conditions and show the count behind each rate. There is no universal sample size that makes a tracked panel representative of all buyers. A single answer is one observation; extra checks can reveal instability but cannot repair a badly chosen panel.
Label that citation definition explicitly: the proportion of valid answers linking to the domain. It differs from the domain's share of all citation occurrences. Deduplicate repeated links within an answer for an answer-level rate. Record engine changes, missing AI Overviews and retries; use the same retry policy for every brand and period.
Do not average scores from unrelated tools or mix modes without a method. Their question sets, collection interfaces and counting rules can differ. Keep the underlying responses available for review and use our measurement definitions when interpreting Linkeddit exports.
5What should the reporting template look like?
Download the blank AI visibility report log (CSV). It contains column names only; it does not contain measured results. Keep one row per attempted answer, with cited URLs recorded consistently. Store raw responses in an access-controlled system and put a reference in the log.
| Field group | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Scope | Client/project key, panel version, buyer task, prompt ID and exact question |
| Collection | Engine, mode, language, location, timestamp, repetition and status |
| Observation | Raw answer reference, brand mentioned, brand recommended, cited URLs and named competitors |
| Review | Failure or retry note, reviewer note, next action, owner and next check date |
The client summary can be a paragraph: “Across [valid] of [planned] planned checks for [panel/version] on [engine and dates], we observed [result]. [Failures or collection changes] limit comparison. We will change [specific source or page], owned by [role], and recheck [date]. Separately, analytics recorded [defined outcome].” Leave unknown fields unknown.
6How do I connect citations to clicks and leads?
Place answer observations and business outcomes beside each other without turning correlation into attribution. A linked source can be visible without a click. A later visit may arrive without useful referral information. A conversion needs a defined event and qualification rule, not merely a new session.
Google's traffic acquisition report explains the session source view. Check the client's actual tracking setup before claiming that a referral produced a sale. Report self-described discovery sources as self-reports and do not add overlapping attribution counts into a single total.
For Google, ordinary search performance and observed AI answers are different views. Use the Search Console AI visibility guide for the available reports and query-level limits. Our own search case study shows why nearly flat impressions can coexist with fewer clicks; it does not establish an AI cause.
7What should I check before sending the report?
Open the evidence behind every material change. Confirm that the cited page is the expected page, a mention is the intended brand, a recommendation is actually favorable and a missing response is labeled. Compare the same panel and explain any new question or collection setting. Remove unsupported causal explanations.
Choose the next action from an observed gap: correct an inaccurate product description, strengthen a source page that fails to answer the buying question, or investigate a competitor's cited evidence. Record the actual publication date and repeat the comparison after the change is available. Google's AI features guidance describes established search practices; an author name, schema or extra article does not guarantee selection.
Disclosure: Om Patel founded Linkeddit, which sells Answer Radar. It supports six engines, cited-source inspection, scheduled re-measurement, share links and CSV exports. This workflow also works manually. The blank template and arithmetic example are original reporting aids, not measured uplift. Frequently asked questions
What should an AI visibility client report contain?+
Show the buyer-question panel, engine and collection settings, planned and valid sample counts, observed mentions, recommendations and cited URLs. Explain what changed and the next action. Report referral traffic and qualified business outcomes separately.
Can I count a failed answer as a brand absence?+
No. A collection failure is an unknown outcome. Keep it in planned coverage, disclose it separately and exclude it from the valid-answer denominator. Report any retry policy so the result is not selectively improved.
Does an increase in AI citations prove that leads improved?+
No. Citation visibility, website visits and qualified leads are different measurements. A cited answer might produce no visit, and a later visit might lose referral information. Report the evidence available for each outcome.
Should I change tracked prompts each month?+
Preserve a fixed panel for comparisons. Add newly discovered buyer questions to a separately versioned expansion panel. Mixing new questions into an old score makes it difficult to distinguish changed coverage from changed answers.
