Managing Subreddit Targets in the Reddit CMS
Subreddit targets are the communities where you plan to publish content from a given campaign. Configuring them properly gives the AI system important context about community rules, tone expectations, and your existing presence, which leads to more relevant and better-performing content.

Adding subreddit targets
From within any campaign, click the Targets tab and then Add Subreddit. Enter the subreddit name without the r/ prefix, though the system will accept either format. You can add as many subreddits as you need for a campaign, though focusing on three to ten highly relevant communities tends to produce better content quality than spreading too thin.
Once added, each subreddit appears as a card in the Targets tab showing the name, your guidelines, and whether it is marked as owned. You can edit or remove targets at any time without affecting content pieces already created for that subreddit.
Setting posting guidelines
The posting guidelines field is a free-text area where you describe the rules and norms of the subreddit. For example, you might note that self-promotion is not allowed, that posts must include a question to encourage discussion, or that only certain flair types are permitted for your content type.
These guidelines are passed directly to the AI during content generation. A well-written guidelines field significantly improves how well AI-generated content fits the specific community, reducing the amount of editing needed before a post is ready to publish.
Marking owned subreddits
The owned toggle marks a subreddit where your brand or team has an established account with posting history. This is purely organizational and helps you distinguish communities where you have credibility from ones where you are starting fresh.
Owned subreddits are highlighted visually on the Targets tab so you can quickly see which communities are warm versus cold when planning your posting schedule.
Best practices for subreddit selection
Choosing the right subreddits is the most important decision in any Reddit content strategy. Generic large subreddits are rarely the right choice. Niche communities with active engaged members and specific topic focus are almost always higher value.
Before adding a subreddit as a target, spend time reading recent posts to understand what content performs well, what the community finds valuable, and what types of posts get removed. The research report feature in the CMS can automate much of this analysis.
- Match your posting guidelines to the actual community rules, not assumptions
- Check posting frequency and engagement levels before committing a subreddit as a target
- Verify that the subreddit actually discusses problems your product solves
- Start with three to five focused subreddits before expanding your target list
FAQ
Can I target the same subreddit in multiple campaigns?
Yes. The same subreddit can appear as a target in multiple campaigns. This is common when you have different product lines or content goals that are all relevant to the same community.
How do I find relevant subreddits to target?
Use the research reports feature to run subreddit analysis on communities you think might be relevant. You can also use the Linkeddit lead generation tool to find subreddits where your target audience is already having conversations.
