Video Editing
Can Claude Edit Videos? What Works in 2026 (and What Breaks)
Claude can edit video in 2026, but only through tools on your computer. The three ways people do it, what each is good at, where it breaks and what it costs, with sources and quotes from the people doing it.
Key takeaways
- Yes, Claude can edit videos three ways: Claude Code running ffmpeg on your files, Claude writing the video as code (Remotion, HyperFrames), or Claude driving an editor (DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 or Linkeddit Studio over MCP, or VEED's OpenEdit skill).
- Claude cannot watch or hear video. Anthropic's vision docs cover still images only, so every route works from extracted frames and transcripts; in our reading, most failures trace back to that.
- ffmpeg is the most flexible route and the most error-prone: practitioners report models inventing filter flags.
- Claude Code is included in Anthropic's paid plans (Pro and Max), not Free; Max is not required. Cost varies with frames viewed and re-renders.
- It works best on talking-head and podcast footage, where the transcript carries the edit. B-roll and gaming still need a human eye.
1Can Claude edit videos?
Yes. Claude can cut, trim, caption, reframe and export video, but only through tools that do the work on your computer. Claude decides what to do; a tool does it. In 2026 there are three ways to set that up, and the word “edit” means something different in each:
- Claude Code runs ffmpeg on your files. Claude writes and runs command-line edits. “Edit” means producing a new file from old ones.
- Claude writes the video as code. With Remotion (React) or HyperFrames (HTML), the video is a program that renders to MP4. “Edit” means changing code and rendering again.
- Claude drives a real editor through MCP. The editor exposes tools (add a clip, trim, add a title) over the Model Context Protocol, and Claude calls them. “Edit” means the same timeline a person would use, so you can open it and keep going by hand.
The routes combine. One r/ClaudeAI reply describes using one tool to trim false starts and HyperFrames for motion graphics.
2What can't Claude do on its own?
Claude cannot watch or listen to a video. Anthropic's vision documentation lists JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP images as visual input and says animations are unsupported, with only the first frame used (checked October 2026). There is no video or audio input in that list. So every video workflow with Claude converts the video into things it can read: still frames pulled out at chosen moments, and a transcript of the speech, usually from Whisper.
That is enough for a surprising amount of editing, because most cuts in spoken video are decided by what is said. It is also why the failures look the way they do. In an r/ClaudeAI thread asking whether anyone had gotten Claude to watch or edit videos, one reply was blunt:
“It’s not really designed to do that. It can’t even easily transcribe audio.”
A creator on r/codex who has edited, in their words, “some 50+ videos now with Claude Code and Codex” tested models as an automatic judge of finished edits. Their write-up explains that Claude and GPT “chop it into frames locally + audio with ffmpeg/whisper first”, and one finding stands out: “Claude didn't even notice the background music.” They flag it themselves as a single-clip test, but the point holds: if a tool does not turn something into text or a frame, Claude does not know it is there.
So judge any Claude video setup by what it lets the agent check: rendered frames and loudness numbers catch mistakes, bare commands do not.
3How does Claude edit video with ffmpeg?
Claude Code writes ffmpeg commands, runs them in your terminal and reads the output. ffmpeg is a free, open-source command-line video tool. When someone asked r/ClaudeCode for the recommended stack for Claude-assisted editing, the highest-scored reply was one line: “Claude can do a TON just with ffmpeg.”
It is strongest on mechanical jobs that are easy to describe and easy to verify: cut the silences, join clips, export a 9:16 version. Claude can transcribe with Whisper, find the ranges to keep, run the ffmpeg command, then check the output duration.
It breaks on complex filter graphs. The r/ffmpeg thread “What's an ffmpeg command an LLM absolutely butchered for you?” opens by saying a basic transcode is usually fine, but:
“the second you try to do a nested -filter_complex or niche audio mapping, it just starts making up flags that don't exist”
A reply in the same thread on filters: “Makes up parameters half of the time.” An invented flag usually fails loudly, which is fine. The dangerous case is a valid command that does the wrong thing, such as re-encoding at low quality or dropping an audio channel, and Claude reports success because the command exited cleanly.
4Can Claude make videos with Remotion or HyperFrames?
Yes, and in the threads we read it is the route behind most motion graphics demos. The video is a project of code: Claude writes the scenes, timings and animations, and the framework renders frames into an MP4. Remotion's coding agents guide names Claude Code and Codex and notes that most coding agents require a paid subscription. HyperFrames, from HeyGen, does the same with plain HTML instead of React, ships a Claude Code plugin, is Apache 2.0 licensed, and requires Node.js 22+ and FFmpeg (both checked October 2026).
This route suits anything designed rather than shot: kinetic titles, animated charts, product explainers, word-timed captions. It depends on a transcript with word-level timestamps. As one r/codex creator put it, “I just tell Codex ‘at this word, do this’ and it uses those timestamps to sync everything”. The same post is candid about the cost: the effect took about 8 to 9 hours, and “This took longer than manual editing for me”, with most of the time spent getting the supporting tools to work reliably.
Two limits matter. First, licensing: Remotion is free for individuals and companies of up to 3 people, and a Company License is required at 4 or more, per its pricing page (checked October 2026). HyperFrames has no per-render fees. Second, the result is a codebase, not a timeline. The r/ClaudeCode poster asking about stacks put the objection well:
“I don’t want the editing process to turn into a script that can only be modified via code.”
5Can Claude drive a real video editor?
Yes. Several editors now expose their timeline to Claude, so the agent edits the same project you can open and change by hand. Three options:
DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1
Blackmagic's 21.1 feature list marks AI Assistants as “Requires an MCP-compatible AI assistant” and available in the paid Studio version only, which Blackmagic lists at $295 on its US site (both checked October 2026). On the Blackmagic forum, a member of the DaVinci Resolve software team listed the supported tools: Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Antigravity and Grok Build. Early users in the same thread are measured about it: one notes “It can only act on what is scriptable though”, and another timed a five-second trim through Codex at about a minute and a half. On r/ClaudeCode, one first-time YouTuber described Claude Code with the Resolve MCP cutting a whole video and, where a choice had to be made, building a timeline that asked them to pick A or B.
VEED OpenEdit
VEED's agent route is OpenEdit, an agent skill rather than an MCP server: free, with an open-source pipeline, tested with Claude Code, Codex and Gemini, with no timeline at all. It composes edits in HTML and CSS and renders on your machine. VEED's help page says it runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 26 only, that captions are the most polished path, and that for captions your audio is uploaded to VEED for transcription (checked October 2026).
Linkeddit Studio
Disclosure: we make Linkeddit Studio, so weigh this paragraph accordingly. Studio is a desktop video editor for Mac and Windows where Claude Code or Codex runs in a panel inside the app, and Claude Desktop, Cursor and other MCP apps connect through Studio's local MCP server. Files stay on your disk, captions are transcribed on-device with Whisper, and it is a one-time $99 purchase with no credits, because the AI is your own subscription.
Studio answers the blind spot from section 2 with two checking tools: a tool that renders up to 8 frames of the timeline exactly as the export will look, and a tool that measures a clip or track's loudness in LUFS, its peak, and where people speak. Every agent edit can be undone, and a batch of edits is one undo step.
Why checking beats generating
Look at what experienced builders end up writing. The r/ClaudeAI creator who open-sourced a Claude Code editing skill described how their rules accumulated: “Every time I rejected one I wrote down the specific reason, and that became a rule. There are about forty now”. The first rule they list is “Captions start 0.08s after the word, never before.” A team building a Claude clipping tool on r/ClaudeCode hit the same wall from the other side: “The problem was that we couldn't see what Claude was doing.” Our reading: whichever route you pick, the agent needs a way to see and hear the result, and you need a way to see what it did.
6Which way of editing with Claude should you use?
Use ffmpeg for one-off mechanical jobs, code for designed graphics, and an editor over MCP when the project has to stay editable by a person.
| ffmpeg via Claude Code | Video as code (Remotion, HyperFrames) | Editor driven by the agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Cutting, joining, converting, subtitles | Motion graphics, kinetic captions, explainers | Editing real footage on a timeline |
| You end up with | A new video file | A code project and its render | A project you can open and edit by hand |
| Main failure | Invented or wrong flags on complex filters | Can mean hours of tool building; edits live in code | Limited to what the editor exposes |
| Can the agent check its work? | Only if you script frame grabs and ffprobe | Yes, by rendering selected frames | Depends on the editor; Studio renders frames and measures loudness |
| Software cost | Free | Remotion free up to 3 people; HyperFrames free | Resolve Studio $295; OpenEdit free; Studio $99 one-time |
7How much does it cost to edit video with Claude?
You need at least a Claude Pro plan, and there is no fixed cost per video. Anthropic's pricing page (checked October 2026) says Claude Code is included in all paid plans (Pro and Max) and not in Free. Check that page for your region's prices. Max gives 5x or 20x the usage of Pro per five-hour session. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly limits, and Claude Code draws from the same pool as your chats. Anthropic states there is “no fixed message count” because usage depends on conversation length, model and features.
No honest per-video price exists. What drives it:
- Frames. Anthropic's vision docs give the cost of an image as width/28 times height/28 visual tokens, rounded up, and list a 1920x1080 frame at 2,691 tokens on Claude 4.7 and later models. By that formula, a 640x360 preview frame is 299 tokens, so 8 of them come to about 2,400 (our arithmetic). On that high-resolution tier, full HD frames cost roughly nine times as much as small previews.
- Retries and the model. Every failed command or rejected render is another round trip, and Anthropic lists the model you choose as a factor in usage.
At least one heavy user reports hitting the cap. A creator who makes short-form videos with Claude Code wrote in the r/codex thread above that it lets them post about once a day, adding “i do keep hitting the limit on the pro plan tho.” Our suggestion: start on Pro, keep frame checks small, and move to Max only if you hit the five-hour limit regularly.
8Which kinds of video can Claude edit well today?
Spoken video is the sweet spot; footage that is judged by eye is not. This is our assessment from the sources above and from building an editor, not a benchmark.
- Talking head: works well. The transcript carries the edit: remove filler words, tighten pauses, keep the best of several takes, add word-timed captions. The open-source skill above was tuned on exactly this, and its author is clear about the limits: “it's one speaker, one camera. No multicam, no beat-matched cutting.”
- Podcast: works well for cleanup, less for clipping. Filler removal, silence trimming and loudness normalization are mechanical and measurable. Choosing the clip that will perform needs judgment about the audience. Our free loudness checker shows whether the export hits a platform target.
- B-roll montage: weak. Picking shots that look good together and cutting on motion is a visual judgment made across every frame, and Claude only sees the frames it is shown.
- Gaming: mostly weak. Hours of footage, the action is visual, and the commentary may be sparse. Claude can cut around the commentary and add captions; finding the highlight still needs a person.
Our test before committing to any setup: one short real clip, one concrete edit, and a check that you can see and undo what changed.

Frequently asked questions
Can Claude edit videos?+
Yes, through tools. Claude Code can run ffmpeg on your files, write a video as code with Remotion or HyperFrames, or drive a real editor such as DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 or Linkeddit Studio over MCP. Claude cannot watch or hear video directly; it works from extracted still frames and a transcript of the speech.
Can AI actually edit videos?+
Yes, for mechanical work: cutting silences and filler words from a transcript, choosing between spoken takes, timing captions and normalizing loudness. It is still weak at taste and at anything it cannot measure, such as pacing. One creator who built a Claude Code editing skill put it simply: the ffmpeg part was easy, taste was not.
Is there a video editor similar to ChatGPT?+
Several editors now take instructions in chat. DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 ships an MCP server for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex and others. VEED OpenEdit is a free agent skill for Apple Silicon Macs. Linkeddit Studio, which we make, runs Claude Code or Codex inside a Mac and Windows editor, using the subscription you already pay for.
Can Claude add subtitles to a video?+
Yes. Claude Code can transcribe speech with Whisper, write an SRT file and use ffmpeg to burn it in or attach it as a track. Code routes render word-timed captions into the video. In Linkeddit Studio the agent adds on-device Whisper captions burned into the export in five styles; Studio does not export SRT or VTT files.
Do you need Claude Max to edit videos with Claude?+
No. Anthropic says Claude Code is included in its paid plans (Pro and Max), not Free; prices vary by region, so check claude.com/pricing. Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session. Whether Pro is enough depends on frames viewed and re-renders.
Can Claude pick the best take?+
Often, when the takes are spoken: with a timestamped transcript it can spot a repeated line and cut the false starts. It is weaker when the best take is a visual call, because it only sees the frames it is shown.
